the front drivers side wheel bearing has just about had it on my little type 3, and i am considering replacing it myself, just wondering how to
replace it and what a new wheel bearign is going to cost?
thanks
Ryan
there are 2 bearings. Inner and outer. Not hard to replace, if you have a punch and hammer to knock the outer races of the bearings out, and
preferably a brass drift to knock the new ones in. I have seen all sorts of other methods like using the old bearing and sockets to knock it in
though. Get someone to show you how to pack the bearings. Hard to explain!
Bearings are around $8ea. You can get a kit from repco/bursons too with the seal in it also. Listed under beetle 68on if its s late type 3??

you should be able to do it easy mate!
Do the other one as well and take the opportunity to check tie rods ends etc. Will drive heaps better. How tight to do them is another show me type
job.
wow, much cheaper then i expected. am a little annoyed that this wasnt fixed 12 months ago when i got the car roadworthy, Ive never had a bung bearign before, so didnt know what it felt like, i thought the issues i was havign were to do with the front disk, but my father noticed it as soon as he got in and noticed the movement pretty quick when he gave the wheel a good shake when he got out. the symptoms have been there (to a smaller degree) from day one when i got the car, thought my ex mechanic would have noticed it when he did the balljoints?
