Cam Selection ( found the death rattle)

Ok found the death rattle.
It seems the stock rivets let go and have rounded out the holes on the camshaft.

Time for upgrade!



I have been looking at eagle cams...
Adv. Duration 286° / Dur. @ .050" 248° / Lift @ cam .430" / Lift w/1.1:1 Rocker Arms .473


I would like some feed back on cam selection.

1916cc counterwieght crank, ported heads, 12lb flywheel,
balanced rods, std rockers and springs, twin 45 Del's, 009 with compufire ignition.

Also thinking Straight cut gears for the reduced excessive side load on the cam bearing thrust shoulder when using heavier valvesprings.

This is all goin into kermit so the extra resistance of all the fans straight off the front will reduce some performance.:grind:

Large ports( almost D ports) and heavy valve springs... STD 1:1 rockers with ball feet.
Thats about all i know..

wow, dont see that so often on a type 1 cam/gear! Seen plenty of type 4's do it.
Is that a stock cam that has been reground?
Is it a daily driver??
What comp are you running?

Clutching at straws from afar, heavy springs could have helped it???

Have you considered ratio rockers at the same time ie match cam and valve gear? The ramps can be a bit aggressive on some cams and this can lead to a shorter life.

Glad it was that death rattle and not something destructive nasty!

That sounds like a pretty good choice depending on your driving style.
Other similar cams are Engle W110 and Scat C35.
These two have less lift on the lobe.

Your cam has alot of lobe lift. Perhaps a little less may be better, but I am unfamiliar with that particular grind.
Most New Hi Perf cams come with an aluminium bolt on gear and that should be ample with what you have.
But straight cuts do sound cool, but may become annoying on a long trip.
If you do buy straight cuts, get the best you can afford. I have seen the cheap ones shatter (cast)

W-110 camshaft- .430 lift x 284 duration....
Eaglecamshaft- .430 lift x 286 duration....
Scat c35 .410 lift x 286 duration....
Very little difference between the three....

The only thing i was worried about the straight cuts was heat.... This is goin into type3 fastie....
Heat is a big problem.

From what i can gather its just a reground std cam... and with the force of snapping second and third the rivets just didnt hold... never designed to hold that much preasure.
The heavy springs could have helped it along....
I'm just lucky they didnt let go..... bent valves and holy pistons....

The other cams that I suggested have similar timing figures but less lift at the valve.
The W110 has .431" at the valve with 1.1 rocker.
The eagle cam has a lot more.
The C35 I am not sure about its valve lift with 1.1 rockers, but it looks as though your info is valve lift for the Engle and Scat, and cam lift for the Eagle.

Engine heat should have no effect ON, or FROM the cam or gear.
If your type 3 is running hot, you have tuning(fuel mixtures and ignition timing) or cooling system issues,
and possible compression ratio excesses.
