240 volts hook Up Question
Beerboy - December 13th, 2006 at 10:27 AM

Not sure if this is a daft question or not. In a hook up at a campsite do I need to make the earth lead grounded on the van body. I would have thought I do. Otherwise the van can come live and will someone will get a shock if outside and touch the van. Is that right?

Also what side are campsites hook up on, does anyone know? thanks in advance

Not sure about earthing the body, we didn't on ours. I know you are supposed to use double pole switches, ie switch both active and neutral. These power points are available from caravan/outdoor shops and cost about 5X as much as normal power points.

As to which side, all the camping/caravan sites we have been to tend to have the power hook up behind the site, on between a number of sites. I don't think it really matters which side your connection is on the kombi, just take a long enough extension lead. Ours are both on the driver's side. Keep in mind that many camp sites will have 15Amp connections, also check the plug type on your kombi and buy the appropriate extension lead.
