Ok, AHHHHHHH~
I took the beetle for a run out the road the other night.
Ran fine in high 2nd, 3rd & 4th. Very groggy on idling & take off in 1st & LOW 2nd~
Took her about 10km out the road, pulled over, (hadnt had her up over 60ks for a while), temp good, idling very groggy, almost stopping, but then fine
on the way back into 3rd & 4th.
Came back into town Got some fuel, struggled to start had to give her a real good pump!.
Today, I fired her up, idled rough, engine shaking wanting to stop, gave her some revs, lightly ideled her for about 5mins, reversed out the drive,
adjusted air by pass screw, didnt do much, but got a zap from my super coil~
Adjusted idel Mixture didnt do much, still very rough, got rougher, then just stopped, & would not refire.
Can I please get some expert suggestions on check list.~
my thoughts were sparkplugs??, although it never had a prob fireing her up before.
Jets are pumping fuel, FILTER is Full(replace?)!! HOSES, FUEL PUMP??(i do have a new mexicano 1)
Thanks All~
Sime~going to try her again or push her back in the drive~

check the coil, dizzy points,
dizzy clamp tightness (timing may have gone way off)
if you want to check the fuel pump is working, pull the hose off the carb and turn over the engine to see if fuel spurts out. dont get any flames,
sparks or hot engines near the fuel though!!
is that a 34pict3 on a single port?
might be a bit overkill
before u try anything
pull the idle jet out
these block up all the time specially when a filter is on the pressure side of the pump
they are only cheap filters and arent meant to have pump pressure thro them so they let alot of crap thro
blocked idle jets give alot of the symptons u describe

Hey all, thanks for everyhing,
didnt, have much time to play today, went with a mate to pick a beetle up, put the battery on charge!
YES she fired up but hey its still ideling low like shite~ the fun of it all~ thanks
Sime~
009 dizzies need to be timed at maximum advance of around 32 degrees... with the engine revving...
but just moving the dizzy back and forth, should get the engine idling OK if the timing is out...
Check engine oil to make sure the fuel pump isn't leaking into the engine oil...
Do You use 95-98 octane fuel??
and from a good service station...
doesn't pay to get cheap fuel....
34PICT3 shouldn't cause any problems....
also check the rotor button in the distributor...
make sure the resistor in the top hasn't burnt out...
wipe inside of dizzy cap with WD40 or petrol...
make sure the carbon button that sits on top of the rotor button is still there.... attached to the dizzy cap...
Lee
I would look at points and plugs first.
Hey Thanks~All~
I have never been reall sure about fiddling with the points!
Its great to get some reasurance, that You are on the right track~
The Fuel I use is V-POWER(used to be optimax I think) & some flash lube~
oh that mexicano was actually Brazilia & its just siting in a box if i needed a quick replacer.
Thanks again all~
Sime~
I see You have an alternator and a vacuum advance distributor... on Your engine...
two good things....
The fuel filter in the engine bay...
it will flop about when it full of fuel and being driven, and can pull a hose off or even pull the pipe out of the pump or carby, or just coming off,
which means fuel being spilt onto a hot exhaust...
this is how Beetles catch fire....
Filter is better up above the LHS rear wheel or under the fuel tank..

rejoice
kkk
if no rejoice it will tell you how to fix it and it is a great read
If it's still idling rough and not so bad at speed, you may have a vacuum leak. Spray a little WD40 or CRC around the carb base and where the manifold joins the head (keep your fire extinguisher handy - especially if you have a "hot" coil.) If the idle improves, you will need to replace the relevant gasket - but you might as well replace all three.
