Summary; rear drum assemblies and front callipers all bolt straight on for a good cheapo upgrade

I was going to swap My rear brakes for those from a type 3.... during My restoration....

I rang Volksbahn and didn't really get any info,
apart from there are 3 different brakes systems used on type 3s...

so , I didn't do anything...
kept My original brakes...
just renewed everything...

there must be a few different front calipers
cos i had a type 3 front end and the calipers on it wouldnt fit a beetle
the mounting holes were about 20mm further apart than beetle ones

I have heard of two part brake drums on the type 3s...

Anyone know if thats correct??

I presume all the type 3 brakes were larger than the beetles..
front and rear...

I can't say I've ever heard of anyone changing the front brakes -- only the rear...
as they are larger?? wider?? drums...

drums mount over hub/drive flange so yeah, are 'two-piece'. They are larger and wider than Beetle to give better braking

Should be used with 68-73 twin-pin Type 3 callipers to retain factory bias etc

I'm about to use a type 3 assembly (transaxle to drums) on my 67 resto.. Found some wide 5's so pretty happy.. My technical advisor says that the shafts from the beetle will be swapped into the type 3 assembly and thats basically it..
I'm doing this to get the advantage on gearing etc as well as the larger brakes.. Married to a 1916..

The Type 3 drums are in 2 parts so you do not need to remove the axle nut to get the out part of the drum off.Very handy when you need to do something to the brakes.

I have put type 3 drums on My swingaxle beetle about 6 months ago, What I did was remove everything including the backing plate from the beetle and took everything including the backing plate from the Type 3 and put it on the beetle ( with new seals and gaskets the type 3 had new wheel cyds) bleed the brakes and a way you go all good .

All up it took me an hour to remove the brakes from the beetle and the Type 3 and have them on and working on the Beetle.
