Hi people,
I am sort of new to this forum. I just recently purchased a 1998 Polo (75hp engine) and had to fill up for the first time last week. I heard that the
car generally uses premium grade petrol but the mannual says it also runs on unleaded 91. As a result I purchased unleaded 91 but the car sort of
doesn't perform as great as before - maybe it has to do with the fact that the aircon was running ?!!!
What petrol would you guys buy ? Any ideas ?

Your air con will make the difference.
Lower octane fuel will cause the engine to ping under load etc, but under general use you will not notice a performance difference.
Most European cars are designed to run on higher octane fuels than aussie unleaded, though they will still operate ok under normal conitions.
u can do a simple adjustment on your dizzie so u lose the pinging when using unleaded.
I have done this with my Seat Cordoba 1.8L and it goes very well and has been in the family for 10 years
it has 256,ooo on the clock and no probs at all even in Qld summer with rig donk (engine is vw in these!!)

cheers for your comments. I probably won't make any adjustments just use the aircon less often I guess. Yesterday actually it took quite a while
before the aircon started cooling - could be because of the immense heat here in Sydney I reckon.
Unleaded 91 is actually not bad for the engine, is it ?!??Generally though I hear that premium is much better and since petrol prices are back on the
fall I might as well purchase premium next time.

I've found that running premium gives better fuel economy and the vehicle runs smoother. I've found this with all my Euros whether they be
VW,BMW,Audi and with friends Mercs etc.
Your running a car (Polo) that give excellent economy anyway, so why wouldn't you give it some half decent fuel!
Just my 2 cents worth.
PS Those Polo's are are very safe ride as my wife can attest to...Had a large accident in which it was written off!
The safety cell, belt tensioners etc all performed extremely well! The Holden was written off also.
I am surprised your manual says that it is ok. You sure it doesnt say that it is possible in an emergency when the other stuff isnt available??

I have a 1.6L golf (1999) and it says 95 minium.
It is generally 5c more.

It really saddens me when you see a 2006 2.0L golf at the servo and they fill up on the cheap stuff. Then they accelerate out of there with a "clang,
ping and bong"

I guess you're right about buying the more expensive petrol. I tripplechecked my manual before going to the station and the guy (from Wales) who sold
it to me told me he always and only purchases unleaded 91. I am very proud of my new Polo and would want it to last for a very long time - which means
that I like to take very good care of it. I am only a student though so every $ I save is important but if you're telling me that it is in fact good
for the car to receive premium, I am only too happy to buy the good stuff.
Sorry to hear that you lost your Polo mate. What are you driving now ? Great car btw ! I had a 1987 Golf Mk2 for the past 7 years when I still lived
in Europe, a Diesel - best car in the world - had to leave it though to come here ...

something that has to be remembered about air conditioning is that it loads up the engine to run it... this means that it will use extra fuel to run
and will "suck" power from the motor also. This means that a car such as the polo with only a small amount of power to start with will no doubt see
the effect of running air conditioning at certain times while driving.. especially in stop start traffic...

green unleaded 95 is now avail lotsa places and good compromise and cheap for promo and evironment friendly !! sometimes 2c less than unleaded!
all depends on budget some ppl use a tank a week
some 3...also if car is fully loaded or just driver!!
and in bigger cars that can make $12 -20 more a cost.
95 without a doubt , 98 is better for it . Dont play around with Dizzy the Magneti marelli system doesnt like that !
