fitting Merc wheels to a kombi ->Now the tyres
DoNkEy - January 22nd, 2007 at 07:30 PM

Have a set of 15 inch merc steel wheels that i thought i would test fit to see if I like it but I am having issues fitting them.

The rear drum has the 2 bolts that are used to hold the drum on if the wheels falls off. These bolts are in the way when bolting on the tyres.

have people had similar issues?

didnt try the front wheels, any issues to expect there?

Cheers
James

greedy53 - January 24th, 2007 at 02:02 PM

besides letting you put them on so they go on as they came off what arev they there for

bushed - January 24th, 2007 at 03:51 PM

so the hub dont fall on yer nuts or toes as u pull off the wheel

also balast lol

humpty - January 24th, 2007 at 03:55 PM

They are just to locate the drum whilst the wheel is off the car, (ie: while you are changing the tyre)..... If you lost a rim whilst driving down the road, I'd say the last thing on your mind will be if the drum is still on the car..... It gonna make little difference to how you stop the car from careening into something or someone, or how much damage will result from same!.... But does it really matter.... I think not.... Remove them and make sure you have tightened the lug nuts correctly, when you fit the flash new MERC rims!!!!!

Er yes it is.......

If the Drum falls off, the brake slaves will pop out and you lose braking on that circuit.

There are 2 different offsets on those stock Merc Rims.

They do fit if you've got the right ones.

Well there you go....Though I doubt you will be able to do much stopping after you loose a wheel.... Its never happened to me, so I can't say what actually does happen.... But I stand corrected..... There is a need for those allen head bolts....

I have some 7.5x16's with a 47ET and some 7x16 with a 41ET and some 7x16 with a 38ET.... I have no idea what MERC's they came of though. I think the rims (6x15's) my brother has on his 15 have the 38ET too..... You got some choices there.... I had the 47ET rims on my lowered 68 Bay and they tucked pretty well and didn't rub anywhere... Though I did have to fit adjustable steering stops.

i think by that stage of developments you would have more to worry about than if ya shoulda put the screws on

DoNkEy - February 3rd, 2007 at 04:44 PM

woah this thread got going. Interesting discussion.

I have the same rims as below, the ET is 37.

I am just testing them atm beacuse there is not alot of rubber on them. Working out if i want new rubber on the stock rims, or something different like this. I guess it depends what comes along at the right price

Whats the width of the rims there James?..... When I ran the 16-7.5 Merc rims, I ran 205/55's on the front and 225/50's on the rear of my 68 Bay.... Fitted up fine.... OD was close to stock, so speedo and gearing was close to stock also.... The bus was lowered a fair bit and nothing touched.... Even when I broke a torsion bar!!!!

DoNkEy - February 3rd, 2007 at 05:16 PM

I got really little idea what the width is.

I believe they are 225's

I was given then for nothing by a kind person and i am just testing the whole no stock rim thing.

I bus is very stock otherwise...

DoNkEy - February 3rd, 2007 at 05:19 PM

just checked,

205/65 all round

IMHO.... If you after a low-down look, the sizes I mentioned might be a better option on the 16" rim..... If yours are 15's, then a 215 or 225/60 or 65 might be better on the rear and a 195/55 or 205/55 might be better on the front..... But it all depends on the stance your looking for and wether you have any issues with running different tyre sizes.... Some peeps do, and strictly speaking its not legal....

DoNkEy - February 4th, 2007 at 12:14 PM

well i have had them on for a day now and i think they are staying. The ride is so much smoother! Also even though the tyres are wider the steering is easier?

Now i am on the lookout for a set with good tyres :)

humpty - February 4th, 2007 at 03:02 PM

Yeah.... Thats about right.... the MERC offset's seem to work well with the bus geometery and the investment in quality tyres will improve the ride and handling quality's like you wont believe!.... Don't scrimp on your tyres..... And don't be too concerned about load ratings and such.... Unless you work your bus hard and load it up plenty, they are very light on the axle weight and gross weight, so any quality performance car tyre will have sufficient load ratings..... Look for something in the region of 700kg or more.... ie: any tyre that is standard fitment on Merc's or Bimmers or CoModes etc.... They are all much heavier vehicles than your bus.....

crewcabconnection - February 4th, 2007 at 10:15 PM

I had 215/50s on the front and 225/55s on the back

nice bus......

DoNkEy - February 9th, 2007 at 08:19 PM

well a mate at work gave me a 2x 225/60's off his BMW, very nice tyres.
Will a tyre shop give me issues fitting this to the back while i have 205/60's on the front?

DoNkEy - February 10th, 2007 at 11:12 AM

k i Just checked again, got some figures wrong.

215x60 are the new ones i got, and the old ones are 205/65's

the width of the rim is 6.5, will the 215 fit on? or do i have a pretty set of tyres without any rims to put them on.

DoNkEy - February 10th, 2007 at 06:50 PM

got them fitted,

look sweet

humpty - February 11th, 2007 at 12:12 AM

A 215 is about the limit for a rim of that width... You could prolly go to a 225 but you might get too much sidewall movement....

Pics please?

crewcabconnection - February 11th, 2007 at 06:29 AM

glad its worked out. I reckon the Merc rims look great on a Bay and cheap as. I had bigger on the back just to allow for the additional weight when filling the bus with sand and stuff from time to time. I was also running Indian adjusters and dropped rear.
