1.6L vs 2L gear ratios

Hi all i was wondering what the difference in ratios (mainly final) between the 2 boxes are. some people have said that the 1.6 is a bit short in 1st but are they the same in the top end. and if i intened to fit some bigger tyres should i just stick with the 1.6.
This is all because i am doing the EJ22 conversion

I think 1.6 Kombi is arund 5.1:1? And 2-litre is 4.3? So quite a big difference.

Subie will pull tall gearing easily

The EJ22 will handle the 2Litre box ratios very smoothly. Has tons of torque to use the most of it.

A 002 (1600) box is rather short all round...and yes 1st is annoyingly short.

For a scoob conversion of any description, the 091 (2L) box is the best plan... as Helbus said, a scoob will easily hold it's own with the taller gearing in the 2L box. even an EA81 pulls like a truck and goes like a cut snake with a 2L box. :tu:

don't forget albins do 3rd 4th and ring and pinion

1600 box with 4.57 ring and pinion and 17's would be sweet

Hey thanks for that website i was checking it out with the gear ratios and they are talking about the 002 3 rib and 002 5-rib does anyone have any ideas what that is relating to, is it on the outside of the housing how it is shaped. Since this is my first kombi gearbox I cant compare it to anything

002 3-rib is the original bay gearbox used with motors (1600, 1700, 1800) through 1973, and on (AFAIK) 1600 powered bays up to 1976. If you look underneath it it will have 3 transverse ribs moulded into it across the transmission case.

The 002 5-rib is the gearbox used with 1800 and 2L motors in 1974-75. It is geared slightly differently to make better use of the 1800's higher power and torque output. Cant remember exactly what the diferences were but I get the feeling 1st is taller, 2nd is closer to 3rd and the final drive is a higher ratio... or something like that. It is pretty much identical in dimensions and construction to the 002 but has a total of 5 ribs moulded across the case underneath.
