WELL THOUGHT I HAD THIS ONE WORKED OUT BUT NOW THE DASHED DAMNED THING JUST WON'T START, DISCONECTED THE FUEL LINE FROM THE PUMP AND FITTED A NEW LINE WITH ONE END INTO A JAR, CRANKED THE MOTOR OVER BUT NO FUEL IN THE JAR. WHERE TO NOW? HELP PLEASE OR I CAN'T GET TO EURO DAY AND THATS THE ONLY DAY I GET OUT EACH YEAR.
please stop yelling.
ok i take it you mean that when you disconnect the fuel line at the carby that no fuel spurts out of the line when u crank the engine corect?
ok so that basically means your fuel pump has a problem.
is it one that bolts together? or a single peice pressed together metal one?
Sorry, didn't mean to raise my voice, just didn't know how close you where. Looks to me that it is a bolt together type, has small bolts / screws
around the top, top is sorta sharish shape, I have one on another engine that is round on the top and seems to be pressed together, not sure if it
will fit onto my motor though.
Thanks
Don
They all fit, the only one thats different (other than 36hp style), is the alternator fuel pump. The alternator fuel pump bolts up the same, only it
sits at a slight angle to clear an alternator. You can still use it, just use the fuel pump pushrod from the engine it came off, which just lifts
out.
Might pay to check the flex fuel line under the tank and at the rear too. I have had the line at the front kink over time and cut off the fuel flow...
Certainly not a huge job to stress over!
is there a blocked tank/strainer? is there a blocked fuel line? Does fuel flow from the line due to gravity when disconnected at the fuel pump?
Check all this too
Thanks for that fellas, can't be anything from the tank as the tank is mounted over the rear axle and there is only about 400mm of line to the pump, from what you have told me so far reckon the pump must be stuffed. Can they be repaired or do I need to track down a new one?
your one with the screws is rebuildable, the pressed one is not.
Why dont you try the other one you have and then it will get you going.
The order either the kit or the new pump which ever you decide.
OK just a kick one, did you replace the pump? Make sure the lines are on right. I rebuilt the engine once, put the old pump back on, and hooked the lines up as per the other 74L bug we have (its has slightly different pump though) spent many hours swearing and working out why it woudn't start. The 2 pumps work different ways. One is in at the top, one in at the bottom...... simple but easy mistake.

there is a strainer in the screw top type under the brass bolt and under the top of the press fit undo the center screw on top
Dismantled the pump and found it full of gunk in the top, stoped there and ripped over to Ben Drurie, jeez is he a busy bloke, seems like a nice enough fella , anyway he didn't have the pump same as mine so sold me one for a alternator type, said the only difference was the length of the push rod and to check the one that is in the spare engine and to use the shortest one (I think), only trouble is that there is a fair bit of difference in the packers, gaskets or whatever they are called between the pump and the engine, how do I tell the difference between what to keep and what to throw away, Euro day is fast approaching and this bastard still isn,t moving, HELP (thats a shout for help), would ring Mr. Drurie but he is flat out and don't want to anoy him so that he fixes my tune problem when I get it to him on Monday (hopefully)
can you clean/fix the original pump
from what i can remember the big bakerlite spacer is removed for the fitting of the alternator pump or is it the other way around
if in doubt measure down to the pump arm in the pump than do the same with old one use what spacers needede
