Building a brand new engine
Learner - February 14th, 2007 at 01:58 AM

First of all what is a good engine case? i'm looking at building a 2300 liters or less. i heard it's a bad idea to have a reinforced #3 cylinder?
what should i be looking at for a performance case?

vw54 - February 14th, 2007 at 06:18 AM

Try the new Aluminium case as they have a high roof area so as to fit a counter weighted crank easier

It also has a filled in section for the bore on number 3 cylinder when your boring the case out to take the larger barrels you need this area filled in

Unless you find a new type manesium case dont bother trying to make a big capacity engine from an old case as it will cost you more in the long run

the Alloy case is slightly heavier than the Magnesium one but with the extra capacity you wont worry about the weight

Ally case................best $700 you will spend.

bond - February 14th, 2007 at 07:24 PM

2300 litres? probly wont fit in a bug.. or even a kombi... maybe a cruise liner...

not to offend - but decide what you want. then research. read. then ask.

nick

maybe a better question to ask would be - are there any popular links online for building a performance motor?

try http://www.aircooled.net/gnrlsite/resource/articles.htm

Of course it will but as Bond suggests

do some research

Learner - February 15th, 2007 at 01:58 PM

did my research best would be a stock case. i just got to make sure what i put in it all is compactible and set up properly. best cooling systerm at affordable price is the stock doghouse system.

Craig Torrens - February 15th, 2007 at 03:16 PM

best of luck :tu:

VWCOOL - February 15th, 2007 at 03:54 PM

The first thing to research is whether you have $5000+ in the bank - because that's at least what a well-built engine will cost

2300 litres... lol... i still dont think this will fit in a bug....

Yeah it will,

it's compactible!

koolkarmakombi - February 15th, 2007 at 04:33 PM

The high compression version is narrower nick :kiss

Buy an Alloy case other wise your gunna waste a lot of money

Learner - February 16th, 2007 at 08:19 AM

yes it will fit... well i would buy an alloy case if i can find one that hasn't been modified at th #3 cylinder.

56astro - February 16th, 2007 at 08:24 AM

Buy one off Mr Pobjoy.

He can do any machining on it that you need.

Nobody seems to get the joke: 2300 litres is probably big enough to power a container ship so no, probably won't fit a VW's bum

2300 CC might be more like it

You might be better off with a Type IV based engine if you need/want that capacity - but as I hinted, check the bank balance first...

Are you poor?

Learner - February 16th, 2007 at 11:53 PM

yeah well ppl no fighting we all know i meant 1300cc right? hehe i'm goin through genberg. he is personaly helping me out (at a distance)

Learner - February 16th, 2007 at 11:59 PM

i mean 2300

bond - February 17th, 2007 at 07:57 AM

gene berg is not personally helping you out

11CAB - February 17th, 2007 at 08:47 AM

Why do you want a case that hasnt been modded at the No.3 cylinder?? That is the weak spot in the case. The new Aluminium cases have made a change to fix this......

The $700 spent on a new case will save you $$$$

Learner - February 19th, 2007 at 09:11 AM

no he isn't but i like to think so. about the # 3 cylinder check out his website (gene berg) it really does make sence not too. save the money to put it in something more usefull.

That'll be a BIG distance...

Do you have any more than the $2000 you said your budget was?

Craig Torrens - February 19th, 2007 at 11:08 AM

Henry Ford is personally helping me out........................as I just bought a new ford.

Im in the market for a new case for a stroker im building and $700 sounds like a good deal, who does them for that price and what branding do they carry Craig? last time I enquired I was quoted over the $1.1k mark :o

I have an okay as41 but if I can get the right case for a good price, I'll just use the as41 for a stock stroke engine for my bug, save me clearancing and the like, havent screwed a VW motor together for 19yrs so anything that can save me time and brain matter is a good thing. ( and oh so shiney new ones looks the dogs bollocks too :) )

Craig Torrens - February 20th, 2007 at 08:01 PM

come on people..stop being so harsh.

we all want berg to help us :)

i get the feeling he is talking about bergs documents posted on his site giving him the info he needs for an engine build.

P.S. Hilter helped me build my bug,. HAHA

Anthony

Learner - February 21st, 2007 at 08:08 PM

hehe i hard to crack a joke in those forums but there are some pretty damn smart ppl.

anyway yes i have read his article which i got off someone online. (more than what's posted online on his site). all sounds really convinsing and quite honestly i recon he makes lots of sence. why fix the effect when u can fix the problem?
anyway i recon i'll go berg to build my engine.
unless anyone else go a beeter place to go to around melbourne. How's that shop next to clayton road? i think it's wolksmen art? how are their engines?

Craig Torrens - February 21st, 2007 at 08:13 PM

What compression ratio does berg suggest to run?

Schmoburger - February 23rd, 2007 at 01:23 AM

I had tea and bickies with Gene Berg this morning... :alien:
