Drivers door on a 69 kombi?

Hi All,

I am looking to replace the driver's door on my 69 Bay Kombi

I have been told that a '69 should use the same doors as any bay made up to and including 1976, and that the ones I want are identified by the countersunk bolt holes in the hinge mounting plates.

Armed with that info I went looking at a local wreckers today and came across some front doors - they had the countersunk hinges - but the leading edge of the door was full of cut-outs, which looks very different to my original door which is solid.

Are these doors still OK - I guess the cutouts are part of the ventilation system - but will these doors still fit?

If I was to get them would it be best to fill in the cutouts or leave them? Do they let water in as they are outside of the door seals?

Any info appreciated before I go and buy them.

I've never thought that the holes in the vertical front of the door would let in water. At least, not compared to the sliding 'seal'. As far as rusting goes, just make sure that the drain holes in the bottom are clear, clean the inside, fish oil the crap out of it, you'll be fine. (Fish oil is just cheap and easy, there's plenty of other stuff you can put in there to stop er... slow ... rusting).

I haven't tried the door swap myself, so I can't say they'd fit for sure, but they sure look to have the same shape don't they? Maybe take your old door along if that's possible, do a side by side comparison...

Careful with those big screws hey!

Cheers, A.

As far as I remember, we tried to put 76 doors on a 69 and something was different but can't remember what it was so Ill have to go and check tomorrow.

My previous advice was that post 76 doors used hex head bolts and not countersunk ones, and that if the donor door had the countersunk hinges I was set

Does this ring a bell?
