I was driving down the highway the other day and overtook a friend.. when i got in front of him and backed off he said he saw flames come out the
exhaust!!
Its a stock 1600 twinport with a set of monza extractors (crap exhaust i know) in a type 3, runs really nice, doesn't backfire or anything.
As cool as this sounds, is it something i should be worrying about?
At a guess you running the carb a little rich( to much fuel).
get them tuned up and it should cure the problem.
steff...............
Yeah my notch used to do the same with a thunderbird extractor. Mine never went away...it just kept on popping neat foot long flames out on over-run. Some mechanics reckoned it was the 009 affecting exhaust closure timing yada yada. But you know it's all part of the different exhaust, more fuel through, more HP, more unburnt fuel timeline.
throw the monza exhaust away and buy a decent single quite pack muffler system
Yeah my super had a monza as well and it did the same. Got the carbs tuned and it went away. I never did like that exhaust. Like vw54 said, a single quiet pack seems the way to go.
Shouldnt it be backfiring if flames are comming out???
scary stuff: flames + vw =

flames good monsas good for flames all good drive it like ya stole it and the flames will make folks think ya have a killer donk
i've chucked flames before too......... blown exhaust gaskets, bent flanges at the head,damaged/rusty slip joints amongst some of the causes, another
was with a crappy set of headers that had loose slip joints where the front met the j pipes, i flanged those joins and no more flames after putting up
with them for 12 months.......... so my vote is for an exhaust leak!
you might want to cover the tail pipes with a rag or similar and listen for escaping exhaust gases in your system...............
Meh.. as long as it isn't going to blow up on me any time soon i don't really care about it.. that motor will hopefully be replaced by the end of
the year with something more potent anyway!
Thanks for the advice! :thumb
