Im busy tidying up under the bonnet of my bug cos it smells fuelly and found an endless mix of thin rubber hoses venting the fuel tank joining to a plastic tube which I presume is an condensation chamber. Is it all really necessary ?

Depends on what your bug you have.
In short, no it can be replaced.
