They work.

I liberated these from the guts of some hard disc drives.

I recently ran 1L of Castrol Spagnatec (10W-40) with 1.5L of GTX2 (20W-50) because i ran out of GTX2 and i had the Spag lying around... after a run at 100kph in some high 20-degree weather with no deck lid stand offs, my engine started to overheat and ping like a muthabitch.... *let the angry cars and buses past while i pull over* I've got a small leak from my pushrod tubes that don't normally give me much trouble, but now with the thinner (and very hot) oil, i could see it dripping out onto my heater boxes and smoking quite visibly..

so i left the engine idling to cool down the engine while i fitted my Hoodjax.. after that, the engine stopped pinging

Anywho, after 800kms, i dropped the oil coz I didn't want a repeat of the overheating. The oil was pretty dark, esp for 800kms. And this is what was on the sump plate after i washed the oil off the plate:



I wiped the magnet on the right side to differentiate how much crap was on it..

where did ya get the mags bloody good idea
as for a hot vw i met an old guy who remembers is dad tell him about vw in the war in the desert and when they liberated one or two from the germans said they were great in the heat but you had to park nthem away at night as the engines glowed in the dark and showing there position
so the heat we generate here should be no probs

if you havnt got a hard drive you can sacrifice you can get them at jaycar or dick smith, they are called rare earth magnets

Chris, I think that the Magnatec is a sythetic?? Air cooled motors can be prone to oil leaks when people,change from a mineral oil to a synthetic oil.
Not totally sure why, maybe its the smaller oil molecules. But the early 911 Porsche guys have a few issues with this.

Stick with the dino stuff mate. GTX2 is a good bet in my experience.

That MAGNET is a VW accessory and Volksbahn has them for sale...
there were mentioned in the VWA Magazine....

I use Magnatec in My Lancers... and have for years...

but I use GTX 2 in My beetle engine...

which is absolutly incorrect...

as aluminium or magnesium will NOT be attracted to the magnets..

Only Steel etc ferrous metals..
