HELP,my beetles got 1 avis adjuster on the top bar,i want to adjust my ride height so the car sits a little higher,when i loosened the locknut and the allen bolt i thought gravity would pull the front down(front end jacked up)but it didnt Wassup what am i doin wrong? yours sincerely lugnuts.

I got an adjuster on each of my front beams. I too was trying to work out which way to screw to raise lower.

What I did was just relax the bolt all the way out - then measure the height of the beam to floor level; then tighten the bolt right up - then measure again. Then you know which way to screw for higher, and lower.

I had to sit and look at the orientation of the adjusters, and imagine what the leaves were doing inside the beams to understand what was happening.

lugnuts, i have never done this before so i may well be speaking out my @ss but... did you pull the little plate out of the ripples? if so would the shocks be stopping the wheels from droping? is there anything else that could be holding them up? have you tried putting a little weight on a wheel (ie jumping up and down on it while cursing in a way that would cause a warfie to blush)?
if that doesn't work... hit it with a hammer
astro i think you and lugnuts are talking about different types of adjusters.

wuth the avis to raise the ride hieght release the lock nut, jack the car up to where you want it then tighten the nut.
if you want to lower, it will come crashing down when you release it, if its up high, so use a jack either way.

The Avis adjustor is designed to lower the car by pulling the top torsion leaves toward the bottom, thereby decreasing the spring force toward the ground (but giving a much stiffer ride, as the two sets of springs are tight against each other.) You adjust the adjustor up to raise the suspension (not as effective as the lowering, and causing a very "woozy" performance - you should invest in a set of coil-over shocks for this one.)

Always remember your castor is affected by any difference between the front and rear ride heights.

Thanks guys lots of good stuff there but still no good.Heres what ive been doing,i jack the car up to get the wheels of the ground,then i get my 22mm ring on it and loosen the lock nut,then i get my 6mm allen key on the set screw and loosen it then take it off,while all this is going on nuffin moves,so if nothing moves up or down then i cant adjust the height up or down.Another thing right when im jacking the car body up the wheels are still on the ground the body is getting higher and higher the wheels are still on the ground and finally the wheels lift up too,so then when i loosen the locknut you would think the serrated steel would slip down a notch or two but no,something is holding everthing in place.Id ring up Geoff but hes a man of leisure now,put out to pasture on the mid nth coast.

Do not undo the allen key , Shit follow my previos instruction, lever the teeth apart.

Rolly yeah i should have said as soon as i loosen the lock nut the teeth dissengage,you would think after the teeth separate there would be some movement but no,

Ok, with car jacked up teeth disengaged , allen screw tight,may-be a little force is needed, knock it upwards or.. Is it already up in the top of the slot?

I just raised a bug last week with avis`s and had to take the shocks off the lower mounts to get it to raise enough. Then as i lowered the car back onto the ground i had to crawl under and put the shocks back on, rather tricky. Also, is there any room for "up" adjustment on your avis. you may be at full up so too speak and only have down adjustment left. To check remove the outside plate and see where grubscrew is located in the slot. Goodluck. Keith.

Thanks Keith ile give it a whirl,there should be more room to move it up because when Hellbug did it i said i wanted it lower 5mins later it was lower.

Fixed,after i pulled the shocks off the lower mounting i got some movement on the adjuster and when i went to pull the bolts from the adjustable swaybar i got a heap more,so now its 27mm higher and the swaybars on the last of 3 holes and i replaced a nut from a U- clamp which had fallen off,so i should be a happy camper,thanks to all,seeya Mick.
