My Starter Motor Pinion Drive was heavily burred so I sourced a new one
Can anyone advise if the ring gear facing surface when new is flat or contoured similar to the Pinion Drive so when it throws out to crank the engine
the drive and ring gear mesh nicely - or is it flat like on the non facing surface and the pinion drive just meshes nicely into it.
Also can the ring gear be heated, popped off the fly wheel and turned over so you have a fresh facing surface to minimise any possible damage to the
new pinion drive? If so where can this be done.
Just being cautious as don't want to damage the new pinion drive on a possibly burred flywheel surface.

VW flywheel is solid.

That's strange as one I've seen looks as though the ring gear is a separate piece but this is a kombi and it may be different
The flywheel for my subaru/vw conversion has a removable ring gear, so you must be able to get them somewhere.
Better clarify the engine type as standard VW manufactured Type I, II and III engines have solid flywheels.

Cast iron Flywheels(most type 4) had removable ring gears.
I think the only one piece(steel) type 4 flywheel is a 914/late912 one.
Replacable ring gears are avaliable and they can be fitted with a shrink fit od .010" to .015"
But I know jack about type 4'sso one of the gurus can chime in.
I have flipped a few ring gears to achieve what you want to do no problems.
Makes it a bit easier to get info on a particular model if all info is given about the engine in question. The original post had no info on the model
type.

Many thanks all for your replies.
The engine is a 2 Litre Kombi Engine with a few modifications so expect the flywheel is a standard one. The starter motor also is the standard 091
911 023 model.
