I thought it was the battery, so I got a new one, it started for about a day and now it won't start again, even with a fresh battery.
Lights are OK, I believe, just a small click when I turn the key.
This week end I will pull the ignition apart to see if its the switch, but I don't think so, 'cos as I said, I've put a new one in not that long ago.
There is no clock, or anything else on. If something was somehow shorting out and draining the battery, how would I find what it is?
Getting very frustrated now.

have you checked the power displacement from the alternator ??

you sure its not the starter. Might be drawing way too much current.
All connections clean and tight? Right from battery to starter.
If you bridge the starter terminals directly on the starter does the engine spin over?
If yes, then the problems back at the ignition.
If no , then the problems in the starter. Could be the solinoid contacts in the starter are burned away or not contacting properly for some reason.
I'm running out of theorys now.

Might sound a bit weird but this has happened to me before and the starter motor trned out to be full of oil. A fair bit of money later, it worked for a while and did the same thing again. Otherwise just check you have good earth.

Test the battery with a hydrometer, or good mutimeter (13.8V full, anything below 12.8V highly suspect.)

It actually sounds like a solenoid problem to me, but it's worth checking your earthing and power connections (sometimes you'll find corrosion on the positive lead to the starter.)

I will try all of the above tomorrow. I have tried two different starter motors with the same problem, so I suspect its something else.
Where does the oil come from that fills up the starter?
How do I check the displacement from the alternator, is this something I can do with a multi-meter?
