Hi Guys, I have a couple of questions which I thought maybe someone out there has had seen or had carried out this type of buildup..
I am currently building up a standard 6 volt 1200cc stinker heater boxed motor. I have a set of aluminium cast intake manifolds, that run 28pic
carbs. I have the linkage and all the necessary bits for it. I am going to run an old skool dunny roll ricoh oil filter. I have a period twin
exhaust luckey which I want to run on it...
Questions.
1. Where is the best spot to tap into for the oil filter to run best?
2. any local suppliers for period style air filters, like the okrasa filters...52 mm diameter to fit on carbs...prefer removable which can be
cleaned...
3. What would be best timing or advance to run the motor at?
4 Is it better to run an 8volt battery and upping the voltage regulator? anyone done this?
5. The carb intake manifolds dont have a breather pipe between them, would it run alot better with a breather connecting the two?
If anyone has run this type of motor with this carb setup any info would be greatly appreciated...cheers
zsolt brisbane..
There's a good post going on The Samba in regards to this. Been keeping an eye on it myself.

Also Craig Torrens has a little surprise in his '54 that you may be interested in. Have a search for some posts from Craig re this, unless he's
around to be able to add something into this thread.
The twin carbs you have were common during the 60s on 1200 engines and worked well. No, they didn't usually run the balance pipe.
8 volt batteries were also used back then. The local (at Blacktown) battery supplier was Pope Batteries and they supplied quite a few around the area
with very few reported problems.

Thanks 1500s, I am bit hesitant to drill holes in the inlet manifolds. I did have a look at the samba to see if anyone has a similar project...not a great deal of pics though...If anyone has an old publication or reference material showing some pics this would help as well...cheers zsolt brisbane..
non of the ones I ever saw had a balance tube, please note that they are called balance pipe, or balance tube, not breather pipe which is a completely different thing altogether, & the ignition timing setting depends on too many factors, you will just have toi wait until you get it going to work that out.

cheers guys, thanks for the help..zsolt..
I run the setup on my 36hp. Use a balance tube.:thumb
have a look

1. Where is the best spot to tap into for the oil filter to run best?
the best place for the out take is of the oil pressure switch you can buy a adaptor fitting to mount the existing pressure switch and use the other
side as an exit to the filter the return line is in the stud that holds the distributor in place it has to be drill out. Okrasa engines did it this
way
3. What would be best timing or advance to run the motor at?
this will have to adjusted when you have the carbies set upjust stop it pinging
5. The carb intake manifolds dont have a breather pipe between them, would it run alot better with a breather connecting the two?
You have the alloy mainifolds which didnt use a balance line it creates a lot more stuffing around this way The Ken Virgin steel mainfolds i have
and have used run a balance line and make the tuning much easier and smoother
I have nearly finished my set up for my 1200 Sea Blue conversion will be fitting it soon, together with all the other hot up bits n wheels
vw 54, could you post some pics please!
Craig, love your oval, I had a 54 some years ago...dont slam it...leave it crusty man...she is sweet..I have a 66 beetle which is original and
crusty....which down the track I have a judson to go on....but for the moment this 1200 setup is destined for my ghia vert...I have the alloy
manifolds like yours Craig...any more close up pics would be great! Do you know who made these manifolds? glad to see some other dudes fiddling
around on these types of setups.... keep the info coming much appreciated...cheers.zsolt.
oldspeed....man there is a beautiful dove blue, 53 barndoor, judson blown panel on the samba...puch in barndoor and check thru the adds...she is
there.....someones labour of love....

Stop mucking around and put a Subi in it.......you know you want too!
Don't deny the force Luke.
yawn
no subi thanks.
i think the manifolds craig is using came out of a kit made in melbourne back in the day. sorry i can't remember the name.
i still curse myself for letting them go.
There was a kit by monaro motors that ran twin SU's & another by the Automotive Carburettor Company in Melbourne running twin solex's there was a
thread about them here a few months back.

Here's a pic of a monaro kit.
