I have an old engine. Trying to work out size without pulling to bits. The number is DV 76054 P and in front of the D is a small vw symbol surrounded by 2 arrows going anti clockwise like a recycling symbol, if you know what I mean. I will attach a pic but it is not real good.

I think you may find that is a "police" number , definately in NSW up to at least the start of the '70's, if an engine did not have a number, you could go to the police station with all your paperwork, & they would issue you with a number & stamp it on the block, it always ended in P , I used to have a 1954 Austin-Healey 100/4 which had one of those numbers on it. I haven't seen a police issued number for years though.

The recycling symbol is an engine rebuilt by VW dealership, i have the same stamp on my 1700 W code type 4 crank case.

I think it might be a 1200 because the other night somebody told me that a 1200 has the exhaust ports 19mm closer together than a 1300-1500. I measured the cylinders and they are about 10mm shorter than my 1500, which would make sense.
Another question now- will the 1200 heads go on to a 1500? or are valve sizes etc different?

The recess for the cylinders would have to be bored to suit the 1500, valves would be a bit small for much HP gain and in general, a waste of time. Get some 1500/1600 heads as it's a lot simpler. Your choice on single or dual port heads. Don't forget, you'd have to get the tired old 1200 case bored for the larger cyls as well.
