Top end engine advice?
lethal_oz - May 1st, 2007 at 01:28 PM

Hi All,

I have to get my top end to my type 3 1600 re built... new piston, rings and valves.
I have been quoted around $2500 for the job. I was wondering if I'm better off buying a reco or a new engine or getting this one fixed. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I also am losing synco in first and second gears... does this mean I need a new gearbox or is this possibly fixable?

Thanks for looking

Cheers
Lee

That is a lot for a "top end" rebuild
Would have thought a full rebuild would be for that money

P&C $300
2 days at $75 - $1200...... should be MORE than ample time
rebuild heads....$300?? dunno

that is $1800

I would get another price.

As for the box..... $450ish to rebuild.
or $250 for good 2nd hand.

get it done while the motor is out

I am sure others will have opinions.

Top end is easy.
How to Rebuild Aircooled Engines $50
New P&B $300
New Heads $250 ea c/w valves
Total $850

Or you can go the cheap option and just install new rings and valves:
Set rings ~$60
Set Valves ~$80

The satisfaction of doing it yourself: Priceless

If you don't have tools, you can afford to buy them for the cost difference between DIY and having somebody else do it.

If you cann't or don't want to DIY, I think for $2500 you can buy a new long block, so I would definitely shop around. Get prices from a few of the suppliers on the forum.
