Reverse light on '65 6v beetle
plebs - May 3rd, 2007 at 09:31 PM

Hi

I am wanting to purchase a reverse light similar to the one in this egay sale

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/VW-Volkswagen-oval-beetle-reverse-light-kombi_W0QQitem...

Question is how can it be connected, is there anyway to hook it up to work automatically from the gear box, or will i need to install a manual toggle switch and engage when needed?

Type 3s have the switch on the front of gearbox for this purpose. Can't remember what year they started. Bug owners should know when the switch position was available for you.

came in 68 12 volt
with facility to screw in switch.

saw a neat right angled bracket setup to a horn button type switch in the tunnel under the back seat where the universl type joint is on a 59 bug i had
simple
no getting under the car just lift the inspection plate and do it
set it up with 2 self tappers with revers in gear
wire it to ??
maybe to blinker lites

the bracket can be short and have an adjustable bolt or screw on it... so u get no damage on the switch adda brake bleeder-nipple rubber on as a cap (impact absorbing) adjust as needed

i happen to have a rubber type horn switch and a reflector, globe and glass of the lamp on ebay if u dont win lemme know and i can send a pic.
will work if u attach to body also

You can get a reversing switch that screws onto the end of speedo cable on the early Beetle. Its a old style acessory. Basically when you reverse the car the speedo cable cable runs backwards and trips the switch and turns on the reversing light. When you stop and move forward again cable turms forward again and turns the reversing light off.

Its the round thing with the wire attached.. Fits between the speedo and the cable.

prob dear greyone

Grey 57 - May 3rd, 2007 at 11:00 PM

pretty rare and a bit exy. But you do see the switches on ebay and at swaps occasionally. The one in the pic is a Hella NOS package for sale on the Samba for US$225.

Ouch!!

I have installed a limit switch on my oval, very easy to do. It makes contact with the shift rod coupling to turn light on.

have a look at the nose cone on yr gear box and see if theres a hex head screw blank in there

If so get the origional switch from a later beetle and instal it into position one side to positive and the other to the light

Hi

I used to have one the switches on my speedo cable on my 63 Beetle rally car, it was pretty creepy waiting for the cable to turn enough for the light to come on after driving with 4 Cibies + high beam on.

The switch on the gear shift lever sounds like much better idea if you don't have a hole in nose cone already, it will also let other driver know what your doing immediately, might save a bit of road rage.

The switch that connects to the rear of the speedo is a TACHOWELLENSCHALTER. It is a dynamo that requires that the vehilce travels about a metre in reverse before the rear light comes on and and a m. forward before it goes out.

I just wired up a normal headlight switch in place of my manual choke knob. What is usually the 'parking lights' operate my reversing light, and the 'normal beams' operate my front fog light. easy! You just have to remember to turn the reversing light off otherwise you'll be like those stupid Excel drivers that leave their rear foglights on and blind you when you're behind them:repuke
