crankcase line-boring
de_ja_vu - May 11th, 2003 at 07:39 AM

as much as i know, every time the crankcases halves are being disassembled it needs to be inspected by a machine shop and reline bored, so i ask, what does line boring means and is it needed everytime the case is disassembled??, for example, i want to replace my cam with a better one, do i have to line bore the case and replace the bearings everytime the case is being disassembled?!

i'm confused... :(

thanx.

A crankcase only needs to be line bored if theres something wrong.

Usually if the case halfs have been loose then it will cause the crancase to fret n wear or hammer out.

this is when the case needs to be faced and line bored

Line boring/align boring like vw54 says is only necessary if you have a problem as suggested . If your going to build a new motor get it checked and if it is required don't be scared off. Some web sites say it's a no no but others say go fot it. I've just had my 1915 case done. Best advise is take the case to someone who knows VW's not your local engineering co.
