Thermostat

I was looking my thermostat under my 69 beetle 1500 engine the other day and couldn't find it. The previous owner must have removed it. Is it possible it didn't have one to begin with?

Is a thermostat needed in warm climates such as Australia (queensland)? What are the consequences of not having a thermostat etc?

We bought a car recently which actually HAS one, fitted & apparently working (warms up very well, but ultimately runs a bit hot -- so may need adjusting...) -- having never had one before in umpteen cars !!
So: can they be bought anywhere? Or are they "history"? Realise that sdat in Qld. may not need one, but could be good for us in colder areas... (ie. for shivering Vicwegians/Tasmaniacs)

ACE_76,
Yes they can be had, but there are two types mostly on the market now. Mexi (? Brazil?) ones which close the flaps when they fail (overheating time!) or stocks of the proper ones that appear now and again in job lots on TheSamba or on CIP1 in the US. Best to ring around and find out what's currently available.
