i am looking for ideas to why i keep burning starters out, i have had a auto electrician look at it and the wiring is fine but when i turn and engage
the starter it draws a massive current and turns over so slowly. I have tryed a number or staters inculind re-con'd ones but still its the same.
anyone got any ideas??? I have replaced all wiring to the staters and from the starter , a new bush was fitted where the stater throws out into the
bell house. i am lost and dont know where to go now, what u think?? any idea will be helpfull and beer will flow if some bright spark works it out

steff.....................
could it be the motor side of things and not electrical
is the bush in bell housing that the end of starter sits in badly worn???? is it a stardard 1200 motor??
the motor turns over fine by hand ( spanner) so its all failry free, certainly not tight enough to casue this problem
the bush in the bell housing is brand new and the old one wasnt to but but as a precation i changed it.
no its not a standard 1200 its a 1776
steff..............
there was a selanoid set up that delivered full 12 volt to the starter damed if i can find it
have you tryed using a scrw driver or something to short across the main power wire on the starter to the small wire on starter near it if this turnes
it over well the problem is in the wiering and make sure the earth is tight and has a good earth strap to motor is ok
hope it helps
is this the same car you were looking to get a 12v alternator for?
yes it is dumone and we did get one from classic in sydney, its been fitted and the auto electrician has checked the wiring and its all good...
steff..........
Will a 12v one fit?
So you are running a 6v starter in a 12v conversion and are wondering why it's burning out ?
Or have I got that wrong ?
i also run a 6 volt starter and dont have problems with a 12volt system so thats not it plebs.
no that wont hurt a great idea for lively starts sounds like u got the oppersit must ponder this further
is there a good earth from the body to the engine block
I had a similar problem a few years ago and as greedy53 said have you got a good Earth which when mine was playing up i didn't , so to fix it i ran a 13mm earth cable from the battery directly to the bottom bolt of the starter motor where it bolts to the bell housing plus also cleaned up the earth cable from the nose of the gearbox to the floor pan and once all done never another problem.
do you run the starter through a relay?
The conversion is not a problem, a 6 volt starter will last for years on a 12 volt system
its a brand new earth lead as are all other leads to and from the starter, it was one of the first things we changed but i will double check its
earthing well but i dotn think its a problem as the auto electrician tested all wiring and found no problems
no we are not running it through a relay but someone did suggest doing so
had the starter checked again today on the bench and all good so its not there..
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!

>no its not a standard 1200 its a 1776 <
Another stupid question!!! If it's a 1776 is it a flywheel off a 12 volt system which is fitted to the engine?????? Did you fit it yourself or
some dumb...ss who did it and didn't tell you. If you didn't fit it yourself then the only way to check is remove the engine. The 12 v flywheel is
slightly larger and different pitch teeth and is sure to slow the cranking and burn the 6v starter motors out as the pinion jams on the flywheel. If
you didn't do it yourself TRUST NO ONE!! Save all this typing as well as money and check it out!

I posted the same question then deleted it as I thought it was a dumb one !! could be the problem though :thumb

Too many of our fellow Veedubbers trust the "expert" Craig and never look at the big picture. I had a storeman at work who drove me crazy with an
XE Falcon which had similar problems but mainly kept bending the starter shaft. Problem ended up being a wrong match pinon/ring gear. Changed the
flexplate and problem solved but only after I refused to straighten it again!
DH
Did you put it on??

You've disappeared with that last post so I guess you are checking it out. Let's know the result.

PS. Why'd you change your bottom line!!?? Surley I didn't pull the chain that hard with what I do for a crust!!

If your running a 6v starter on a 12V flywheel then you will ALWAYS have problems
you need 6v to 6V flywheel or 12V to 12V flywheel DONT interchange
yes your right a 6v starter will last a long time with 12V power going through it, but will burn out quicker than a standard unit
also directly earth the starter by fitting new cable to the starter mounting bolt
as 1500s says check out the flywheel thats fitted to your engine and then match the starter to it
If you didn't do it yourself TRUST NO ONE!! Save all this typing as well as money and check it out!
FIXED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! haha
no it wasnt the fly wheel i put the 6 volt on myself but the thing i didnt do myself, the bush! the mechanic fitted it. today when i was once again
going over everything i noticed it had a fine line which turned out to be a crack, fitted another new one and its spinning fine, drawing perfect
current and doing its job perfect!!!
dont know if it was damaged while fitting or was already done but the little bastard has been a real thorn in my side.
thanks to everyone who gave suggestions now to finish the last couple of bits and drive the sucker!!!!!
