I have a 1971 Beetle. In the manual it says that to remove the seats I have to slide them forward as far as possible then use a screwdriver to push some spring down. Now I don't see the spring and have been trying to remove these damn things for 45 minutes. Then on this page: http://steve_vwworld.tripod.com/ht/seat.htm it says that for a 72 Beetle to slide the seats back...

Please look at the pics and tell me what to do!

Forward is the way to go, I'm pretty sure. I have seat bases and runners like that in my pan and I slip them in and out from the front.

I think that big spring in the pics is supposed to be hooked up to part of the seat base when it's in so that it is spring-loaded to pull forward.

Can I have the 20c in the pic? Consider it payment for technical advice.

Yeah I guessed that's what that big spring was for, it wasn't attached LOL.

As for the 20c, it's amazing what you'll find under the carpet and seats of a Beetle!

You can come pick the 20c up from me if you want!

As long as you have the release lever open like it looks that you do in the photos, they should be free to move out, they may just be stubborn given they normally just go back and forth but rarely right forward and then out,
I had trouble getting mine out originaly so I got hammer to {not to wildly} persuade them to slide forward, maybe even a lever to force them forward, there shouldnt be anything else to hold them in bar a bit of built up grime. Hope they come out with little more frustration for you.

Don't know why the manual said there was a spring to push down... maybe the previous owner acquired the wrong manual!

I also didn't think a hammer would be necessary, didn't even cross my mind!

If it is a 68 and on bug with the double sliders on the bases then they have a small metal tal on the runner which stops the seat sliding all the way out. You need to depress this when you slide it tha last bit to get them out. This was a safety feature to stop them coming all the way out in an accident.
If you look at your pan runners you will see it there. Pretty sure it is on the outside of teh drivers seat and tunnel side of teh passengers seats. You get to them from the top with a long flat tip screw driver, they are simply a small falt piece of spring steal connecetd to the pan not the seat runners.

Yeah Brads right, there is a metal tag which needs to be pushed down when the seat is most of the way out and is on the tunnel side of the seat.

Actually - it's not the "tunnel side" - it's the right side of either seat where the horizontal rearward facing tab sits - ouboard of the runner itself - just push it down with your finger or a screw driver as you slide the seat forwards and it will fall off the runners.

My method for removing the seats is to sit on the seat, slide it fowards as far as it can go, release the coil spring underneath, then with my finger on the relseas tab, slide the seat a little more forwards.

Now get yourself out of the seat (wthout sliding it backwards), climb in the back (behind the seat) and whilst holding the seat-back, push the base forwards with your knee/foot, and it will drop of the front of the runners. Now (since you are already holding the seat in your hands) you can simply move it out of the car and place it on the ground. No twisting or bending involved, so this is quite easy on your back too.


To install the seat, place it roughly in position, then get in behind it (sitting on the back seat) and hook one side of the runner on to the front of the floor track, then rotate the other side on the the other track, and pull the seat towards you - it will click over the tab and then stay put whilst you re-attach the coil spring and then you can climb in the front and slide it back to your preferred position.

Whilst the seat is out, always clean the runners and tracks and wipe on a little vasiline (which won't stain clothes like grease can - the girls in dresses will appreciate that.)

Its on the tunnel side for the passenger seat - cant remember for the drivers side......

He probably ripped the damn tag off when he bashed the seat loose with the hammer...

How do you add 2 or more images per post? I work from the thumbnail file off "my computer" thru the memory stick on my dig camera. Every time I add the 2nd one it displaces the 1st one! Do you need to create a file somewhere then add the file??
