Keep cutting out!!!
Unity-28 - May 12th, 2003 at 04:25 PM

Hi all! Of late, as I have been driving, Sometimes the car will just turn off as I am going along! Ive noticed that it is only when I turn my lights on, and happens like once a week! for the past couple of weeks! I had a new generator fitted about 21/2 months ago and b4 that it never did it! Any suggestions about what it could be? Ignition barrel maybe?

TY in advance! N!

Does it happen every time you turn your lights on? Does the engine restart with the momentum of the car or do you have to pull over?

Unity-28 - May 13th, 2003 at 12:52 PM

Nah, I drive quite a bit at night, only every so often! Its Auto so I have to pull over, And It really strugles to start after that, as in not much charge!

Cheers N!

Sounding like a dud generator or regulator.

Is your generator light coming on?

How is your battery?
Maybe a short in the battery. When you turn lights on you are drawing off battery not genny and she dies? :jesus

Battery is fine, Its real weird! No generator light comes on. Nothing! I am taking it back to the guy who put the generator in, see what he says!

Does the gen light work at all?

Unity-28 - May 14th, 2003 at 12:05 PM

gen light works!

I'd like to see what a voltmeter accross the genny shows with lights off then lights on. It doesn't need much "juice" to keep the warning light out.
New one on me & I'd love to hear the outcome & I hope it's not too expensive!

Have you changed your coil recently? Sounds like the coil is getting too hot after driving for awhile. Does it also stumble or backfire before cutting out?

vw_carrera - May 15th, 2003 at 09:27 PM

sounds like it could be a short somewhere

be good if you could attach a Volt meter to the battery even if just temporary (muti meter ) to see what is happening to the Voltage.

Unity-28 - May 16th, 2003 at 10:42 AM

Yeah, my thoughts were that the coil is stuffed, And it usually is after a while of driving, But when I changed the generator, the auto elec told me everything else was fine! IT doesnt splatter b4 cutting out, it just does it!

Thanks all! N!

It was the bloody DIzzy! That was stuffed, in turn killed my battery so The damage was $300. New Dizzy, Flasher can, Battery, Coil, and a couple of bulbs!

Thanks all for any info!
