I'm in the process of fitting the engine harness to the EJ engine in the SR. I've had it reduced to its essentials by Brad of Custom Offroad. What I'm doing is to shorten some of the wires as they are far too long and there is nowhere to stuff the extra wire out of sight. I also want the harness and other wiring to be a neat and tidy job.

I'm doing one wire at a time, soldering the joins, staggering them, heat shrink insulating them and being very careful, but some of the wires look like coaxial cables.

I cut a grey cover over 3 wires (red, white and black) and there is a wire mesh around the wires like a coaxial cable. The mesh is not connected to anything at the ends like a coaxial cable would be, so I assume that the wires are shielded.

Is that so? Will it be O.K., if I join the wires as I have done to the others, join the shielding and make sure that the joined section is well shielded?

Having a steam age brain which stopped developing when fuel injection and computers were fitted to cars, I'm on a very steep learning curve.

As you can imagine, when I saw what I had cut I shouted a very rude word, brought down all sorts of imprecations upon the heads of Subaru's engineers and declared a pox on all of their houses.

Please help me here. I'm completely stymied.

I have successfully lengthened and shortend the sheilded cables as you have described in the suby looms on a number of occasions without issues.

Some people warn against this, however I have never got a good reason as to why not other than it is a fiddly pain in the ar$e of a job.

Red, white black, sounds like the O2 sensor....
