56' beetle pop up indicators
56veedub - July 16th, 2007 at 06:17 PM

So I just picked myself up a 56 beetle with the pop up side indicators. Unfortunately not functional.

I just pulled them off the car and when hooked up to power directly do nothing.

However if hooked up to power and moved by hand to the point where the rod inside the coil contacts the positive(assuming its positive) terminal they flick the rest of the way open and the indicator globe lights up. I'm no auto elec so was wondering if there is something I can do to make them function as they once did as they are obviously not completely stuffed, or are they still not salvageable?

Hopefully someones had them apart to understand my description, will try get pics but currently have no camera.

cheers
Ivan

There are two screw terminals, the bottom one closest to mounting screw is positive in. The second terminal is a ground return to light up your indicator light in your speedo. Make sure you have a good earth to body of semaphore and a fully charged 6 volt battery.

Did you have one end of the assy on the earth terminal and a wire to the lower screw then to the positive side of the battery

they earth through the frame of teh assy not on the screw terminal as above the top one goes to the dash light to indicate there on

as stated above make sure you are powering them correctly. a good clean of the pivot point will help the movement of the arm also.
check that whilst in the retracted position the arm has to be powered to raise. if not you have to bend over the tab at the top. this will stop the arm from raising when you go around corners.
I have a post... can't remember where it is but do a search through posts by me and the word semaphore... it has pics of the ones from my car that i rebuilt to work on 12 volt and have the lamp flash with the rest of the indicators on the car. It shows a few pics of the semaphores in pieces etc.

Thanks heaps for the info guys. One is now functional due to a better earth connection, the other still needs some tlc to get it going.
