'56 heater control flap removal

Ok so I want to remove the heater flap control boxes from the underside of my 56 bug. I have unbolted them from the various mounting points around the engine but I can't seem to work out how the actual rod that connects to the flap connects up so I can remove them. Might have something to do with the 1/2 inch layer of grease/crud I'm working with. A point in the right direction would be good as to where they connect up and how to remove.

A few cans of degreaser sounds like it will do the trick with some elbow grease (pun intended) :)

They are part of the exhaust tube as well, and the rod is held in with a split pin on one side and the flap have 2 bent sections into the lower section of the box

It's baked on, so gonna need to be removed and cleaned with a grinder like everything else on this damn thing :p.
