Originall they were 5.60 - 15 cross ply

best radial conversion is a 165/75 or 80 - 15"

to get better fuel economy by using larger diameter tyres

You only need to put these on the rear

Front tyres are 165x15 or 165 x 80 x 15

Rears:
195 x 65 x 15 is 637 mm
205 x 65 x 15 is 649 mm
215 x 65 x 15 is 661 mm

those are measurements around the outside of the tyre tread... it does vary slightly from brand to brand..

Bridgestone 205 x 65 x 15 is 647 mm

so the larger radius is the best for fuel economy...

I'm going for 215 x 65 x 15 on My rear wheels but My rims are 6 inches wide..

Hi

As Bizzare said 5.60 x 15 = 618 mm diamter. The closet thing would be a 155 x 15.

Hi Steve,

Yes, 155 x 15 were the radial tyre size for beetles

but these are no longer available

165 x 15 can be found [$125] which were the standard radial tyre for type 3s...

late model beetles had a wider rim /wheel in the USA
I don't know if thats the case in Australia.
but type 3 rims/wheels bolt straight on and they are wider than beetle rims..

Hi Lee

I thought he wanted to know the standard sizes, maybe for insurance or rego purposes.

Hi Steve,

My Auto has a 4.375 to 1 diff ratio
so I want larger Tyres to give Me
lower engine revs...
at Highway speeds...

later autos had 4.125 to 1 ratio...

so the larger OD tyres should help...
