Type 1 Lifters in Type 4 engine
Doug Sweetman - November 22nd, 2007 at 03:17 PM

Hi all,

Long time no visit..... but I have a mate here at work who owns a 914 porsche and would like to install type 1 lifters into the Type 4 motor it is running.

Apparently a bush is required to fit the Type 1 lifters into the Type 4 block - would anyone know who might carry these in Australia or overseas ?

Appreciate your feedback, many thanks in advance.

Hope everyone is well and happy and enjoying their VW rides.

Cheers,

Doug

rod penrose might have suitable lifters for you. unsure about the bushing though.

The bushings will most likely have to be made as a one-off.
This is due to normal lifter bore wear.

Aluminium bronze or 7075 aluminium would be my choice of material,
and have the lifter bores finished AFTER being fitted.

Unless your going to run a big cam with huge lift and duration it aint worth the time and money you also have to machine flat the lifter bores ala type 1 case. I just came back from Canada and visited Jake Raby, he has new tool steel lifters that will do the trick. He has them for type 4, type 1 and wasser engines. Using standard type 1 lifters you do need to bush the lifter bores, but he can get them made to use standard type 4 lifter with type 1 face on them, your looking at around $300 US for a set. Look at his site forums aircooled technology and it has more info than i have given, also the typefourum on shoptalk fourms a user type 4 unleashed also has thes unique lifters.

Damo.

i knoe the lifters n cams are soft and wear easy in the Type 4 engines but is there any other advantage ???

The larger head diameter allows for a faster lift rate on the lobe.

Scat used to sell a 'drop in' lifter for this purpose,
but not sure about their reliability under current lubrication availability.

Sounds like Damo is onto a good thing if that is your cup of tea (type 4s)

http://www.ahnendorp.com  in germany does this a lot. He also sells original Mahle type 1 lifters (about 130 euro a set iirc).
Personally I always use a light type 1 lifter with any cam I have ever used. Never had a flat cam.
At the moment, the light-weight (56,5 gram) tool steel type 1 lifters from Thorsten Pieper at about 250 euro a set are 'the thing' for me and all I use.

Walter

I believe that my mate wants to do it to quieten his engine down a bit, in terms of valvetrain noise.... it has been suggested by PEter Arnoldi overe here in Perth. I dont know any more than that about it.

Many thanks for all of your responses !

Good to see the spirit is live and kicking here on Aussieveedubbers...
