Sloppy Steering
lownslo - November 22nd, 2007 at 04:13 PM

Ok so I would say there is about a 1/2 turn of steering slop in my 56 beetle. Under the hood I know there is an inspection cover with an adjuster to take up slack in the steering box but is there any other adjustments as this doesn't really seem to take up any of the free play I have, or is it just a case of reconditioning or finding a better condition steering box.

I saw in a manual that there is another adjuster but in its place on mine is just a welsh plug, so I'm guessing this must be only on newer models. Is there anything else I can do to take some of the slop out of this thing as just keeping it straight when there is tram lines on the road is a firggen nightmare.

What year range beetle can I get a steering box out of as I know there is a newer model beetle at my local wreckers I could pinch one out of. Mines an import 56 that I had converted to RHD if that makes any difference.

cheers

check the steering coupling, the round rubber disc that joins the steering shaft to the steering box. Sounds more like that if you have half a turn.
If you adjust the screw on top of the box in too far, your steering box will wear very quickly!
