FUEL, AGAIN,AARRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHH
donn - December 28th, 2007 at 05:05 PM

DRIVING ALONG, FEELS LIKE I HAVE RUN OUTA FUEL, KNOW THATS NOT POSSIBLE BECAUSE I FILLED UP 50 K'S BACK WAIT A BIT AND IT STARTS AND GOES ALONG NICE FOR ABOUT A K THEN SAME THING, BY THE TIME I'VE GONE ABOUT 5 K'S DOWN THE ROAD ITS 50 METERS THEN WAIT, ANOTHER 50 THEN WAIT SOME MORE, CLEANED THE JETS ON THE CARB BUT THEN NOTICED BUBLES COMING UP INTO THE FILTER BETWEEN THE PUMP AND THE CARB.....WHAT DO YOUS RECON. NEW PUMP, NEW CARB, OR A MATCH?

pod - December 28th, 2007 at 05:42 PM

try running your fuel filter before the pump, and maybe blow out your fuel lines as it sounds like they are blocking up,if they are clean then it seems like the fuel pump has died:td:

donn - December 28th, 2007 at 05:47 PM

YEAH, THATS OVER CAUTIOUS ME, 2 FILTERS, ONE BETWEEN TANK AND PUMP, ONE BETWEEN PUMP AND CARB, BEEN LIKE THAT FOR ABOUT A YEAR BUT I STILL GET NASTIES IN THE SECOND FILTER. PUMP IS FAIRLY NEW BUT I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT "THEY ARN'T REAL GOOD QUALITY THESE DAYS"

modulus - December 28th, 2007 at 06:45 PM

It's caused by your Caps Lock key. SET IT OFF AND ALL WILL BE WELL!!!

It sounds a bit like fuel percolation; how hot was it when you were driving?

So sorry, didn't mean to yell but I'm harda hearing so thought it would help you all out there if I spoke louda. Perculation, please explain, is that anything like vapour lock where the fuel turns to vapour in the line? the temp wasn't all that high, mabe 25d. What I cant figure is if it's the fuel pump then why is the fuel filter, above the pump, ful, and why will it start after leaving it stand for a while but cut out after motoring along for a short distance? BUGGER (oops sorry for yelling again)

greedy53 - December 29th, 2007 at 01:26 PM

how is the filter in the pickup in the tank looking a really easy cause of just what your describing

Hi

Its a fire hazard to have a filter between the pump and carb, many nice bugs have been lost this way. If your getting crud in the filter you tank still your tank filter could be blocking as greedy said.

My breakdown story. I went on a trip to a VW show in Canberra, its about a 3 hour trip on a very good freeway.

About 40 mins from home I noticed stutter at high speeds, I dropped back down to 110 and it was fine. About another 1/2 hour down the road it happened again so to make sure it was a fuel problem I kept my foot down until the car stopped. I then removed the main jet plug almost no fuel came out. So it was fuel problem.

The car kept running OK if I didn't push it. A bit further down the road I bought a new fuel filter and replaced the under tank filter near the master cylinder which was only 3 weeks old anyway.

The problem started getting worse, so I pulled into rest stop were a few club members pulled over to help me. It turned out being a blocked line between the tank & pump. I had every tool you can imagine to fix any problem I could foresee, but not an air compressor.

So I reluctantly called the road service company that I work for, a patrol man came out and blew the line out. A huge piece of broken down rubber hose came out of the line. It was about 15 x 2 mm in size.

I have only owned the car for 9 months and have done many high speed country trips in the car with no other problems.

Part of my regular servicing from now on will be to blow the steel line out.

Thanks for the help fellas, I have just installed a new tank, its a buggy so dosn't have the standard tank as a vdub would normaly, the lines (rubber in a stainless web) are new, no filter in the tank thats why I installed two filters, but thinking about what you have posted Steve maybe thats where my problem is, maybe theres a blockage at the outlet from the tank, just maybe I didn't get all the gunk outa the tank after I made it and fitted all the bits onto it. Well thats something I havn't yet checked so first thing Tuesday I'll give it a go. (off to the Myal Lakes in about ten min) thanks for the advise.

These are alll classic symptoms of vapour lock (aka percolation); you can reduce the probability of v.l. by getting rid of the filter between the pump and the carb.Sometimes v.l. can be caused by high volatility fuel.

If your tank cleaning does not cure the problem:
- dump you current tank of fuel
- remove the second filter
- fill tank with fresh fuel
- observe

One test for vapour lock is to add a few litres of diesel to your tank (reduces the petrols volatility) and see whether it persists.

Good luck.

Hi

Seeing its a buggy, make sure the tank breather is operating as well.

Well, showes ta go ya, it's not what ya know but more who, never would have found the problem but for the suggestion about the blocked line, started at the carb and blew the lines ot (mouth type compressor) all clear till I got to the filter to tank section and there it was, had to poke it out with a bit of wire, a small piece of rubber jambed in the small metal connection to the tank, now off to take it around the block about 150 times, don't want to get too far from home till I'm sure that I have it fixed. THANKS TO ALL WHO CONTRIBUTED yep meant to yell in case your not near the puter.
Thanks
Don

vw54 - January 2nd, 2008 at 10:07 AM

theres only one way to fix the problem is to start at the front and work to the rear pulling each item and cleaning or blowing it out

the filter should be between the tank n the pump on the low pressure side

Good to hear it worked out.

How many times have I got to fix the same problem? As posted all went well so threw the Mrs into said buggy and off to Forster, about 250k, cruisin great but about 5k from destination it coughs a cupla times like running outa fuel, made it to camping area and checks all no prob found and ran around town all day going fine. Returning home, gets about 20k along the road and it all starts again, nothing but problems, limping along on the edge of the hwy, lucky to get to 30kph and hills killed it completely till started again, stops al Buladelah and pulls all the bits off that I thought may be the cause and noticed those bubles coming from the pump into the glass fuel filter again (ok, so Iv'e been told already, ok I'll chuck it), fitted a length of clear tubing as temp fuel line, no bubbles now, test run and she's screamin so back on the road for home. About 40 k from home bloody thing dies in the arse, huge backfire and she no go nomore, tried starting it till the battery was just about dead, called No. 2 son and towed it into Raymond terrace and left it at a 24hr garage, arives home 2.30am (gota love that son o mine) back yesterday morning with trailer and chain block to pull it onto the trailer but not required, bloody mongrell started first go and I drove it onto the trailer, now seems to be going fine again, but like a cheating spouse I dion't trust it no more. BUGGER.

Bizarre - January 5th, 2008 at 09:15 AM

I would pull the WHOLE fuel system
Tank
carb
pump
filters
all flex lines.

Clean and seal the tank (Por 15 kit or similar), kit the carb and relace the rest.

High pressure the fuel line.

Am guessing there are more bits or rubber floating in the tank and system.
What you found the other day is probally the first of many

donn - January 5th, 2008 at 11:01 AM

Clean and seal the tank (Por 15 kit or similar...................Por 15 kit???????????

donn - January 5th, 2008 at 11:11 AM

Ok, so here's another guess on my part as the new exhaust system is fairly close to the spark plug leads (I've tied them back as far as possible), could the prob be too much heat on those leads, if so why could I travel so far with no prob then the bitch play up so soon after setting off in the evening, thinking..thinking..thinking.. Thanks for the tip Bizarre reckon I just will do that.

Have a read in the following

BTW - it isnt the leads - guaranteed

matberry - January 5th, 2008 at 11:31 AM

I found a bit of debris under the needle and seat that caused a very intermitant fuel starve problem.

greedy53 - January 5th, 2008 at 04:57 PM

you have a dirty fuel problem stop screwing around and start at the tank clean and seal all lines and filters known and check for unknown i had a very similar run around and it was dirty fuel ended replacing the tank to cure the problem
you may have a rubber hose thats coming apart inside sometimes the outer hose look great but the inside is hadit so replace all
use a clean container and let the tank drain into it through the system as far back as you can right before the carby would be good and see what the fuel looks like any dirt any dirt is no good also have a look at the float bowl it can tell you a lot
good luck

Blue65 - January 8th, 2008 at 04:00 AM

I had a similar problem. Turns out it was vapor lock. Volkshome fixed the problem by installing a Kombi's fuel pump to my VW Type 1. So far so good. The larger pump helped.
