wtf? do u mean under the cylinders ie; deflectors???

Hi

I think they call them cool tins, there has been some debate on other forums about their usefulness.

Yes, the proper name would be type 3 air deflectors that sit under the cylinders...

the ones on a beetle engine are roughly just a square piece of sheet metal...
that sits under the cylinders...

the type 3 cool tin is a much more complicated piece of tin wear...

but it was never used on beetle engines??

I'm thinking of taking mine off and replacing them with the standard beetle type..

better than none I reckon.

Hi Lee

There must be a reason that VW never fitted them to type 1 or 2 motors.

Yes Steve
I've been thinking that...
seeing the fan is different and in a different place..

so maybe type 3 cool tin is for type 3s only...

I'll replace them with type 1 cool tin..

they were used on kombi motors too.........

you won't get the cool tins off without the engine out and the heads removed :borg:

Ive been using them do appear to have any probs ??

they do make the air flow more direct and surround the barrels

Hi

I guess its no accident that Type 3 motors and Type 4 motors both have horizontal cooling air flow from a crank mounted fan and both need elaborate under cylinder tin ware.

Also interesting to note that early Type 3 motors used the type 1 under cylnder tin also.

Since the info about the under cylinder tin came from VW it may help to take their advice,
but I would not go ripping into your engine just to change that.

Hi

Another problem faced when you fit these, is most original Type 3 tins were set-up for 10 mm head studs, if you fit these to 8 mm they rattle around unless steps are taken change the stud hole size.

Care must also be taken when fitting them to larger than stock cylinders as they can interfere with the fins and not allow proper head sealing or push the pushrod tubes away.

They will fit the 8mm studs but require a lot of tweaking

Lee,

Here is a discussion on the subject from almost a year ago, there is also a link in it to experiments done by Jake Raby using both types of tin. He reckons there's not much advantage with type 3 tin in a type 1 setup & others reckon that in a type 1 the type 3 tins can more easily collect muck ( dust stuck to oil) and actually make things hotter.

Thanks Matt,

I have the engine out and I'm going to replace the type 3 cool tin with standard tinware for a type 1..
