Build locally or not?
Yogie - January 16th, 2008 at 02:03 PM

I want to build a reliable type 4 engine to go in to my ghia. I like the look of the Jake Raby DTM 2270cc engine but don't like the idea of having to get it done over in the US and sent back here.

I also like the idea of just getting a case here and buying nikkies P&Cs etc to go in to it but am not sure which way to go.

I am looking for about 150hp at the rear wheels but reliability is the most important thing.

Any suggestions welcome on how to go and what types of cams, cranks, heads etc.

Yogie

The first question is do you have a budget or any idea on how much you can spend

Yogie, i have visited Jake Raby late last year for 4 days and ordered a 2270 kit from him, it will be here in a couple of weeks, i have also registered a business called Aircooled Motor Works, and i will be concentrating on the type 4 mainly for type 2's but also type 1 installations, i would be more than happy to help you out, plus i am in brisbane too. I also have 17 Type 4 engines in my shed and have a 78.4 type 4 crank with type 1 journals that i bought 2 years ago, i have 5 sets of original 94mm cylinders that i am boring and honing to 96mm to use the KB 96mm piston, both in 22 and 24mm pin size. If you need help let us know, cheers Damo.

You are going to need some VERY good cylinder heads to make 150 at the wheels N/A on an Australian dyno.
Damo should be able to build what you want,
but remember USA HP ratings seem to be much higher than ours, so either over rate your request,
or expect to do more to the heads to acheive what you want.

I know little about type 4 headwork, but would guess you will need at least a 44 inlet valve, perhaps as big as 48mm to reach your goal.
38mm exhaust valve should do it.
Again, perhaps Damo will share some experiences.

Thanks for that guys. I was expecting to be in the 10k range for the engine.

I will get in touch with you Damo as having someone locally to do it would be great.

Thanks

Yogie
