Hello there fellow Vdubbers....can anyone tell me what tyres I should get to put on my VW.
I have a 1971 superbug and want original type tyres that are good ones not rubbish. I dont want it looking like a grass hopper with fat tyres, just
normal run of the mill tyres. At the moment I have 15" tyres (175's I think) on original rims (not mags), if that makes any sense (sorry.. I just
bought it and dont know much about the car only that I dont think they are the original tyre width) if someone could help me out, that would be
awesome. thankyou. I want to keep the car as original as possible.
regards Jules
i currently run 205/65s on a set of 15 by 5.5 inch rims. the stock rim is a 15 by 4.5
the stock size was 165 straight ie 100 in ratio
i run bridgestone turenzas.
Michelin XZX 165's x 15inch................be sitting down when they give you the price !
They look like the picture in this post, and were original spec on VW.

Kuhmo make a tyre in this size as well, not too bad either!
the last stock size tyres i got were 165 hancook centuras from memory
i still got one as a spare so ill dbl check tomoro
but they were well priced (this was 4 years ago tho) and handled really well in the wet which was my main want
when i slammed my bug last time i fitted 185/65 tyres
but this was on 74 rims which are 1/2" wider than earlier rims but i have seen that size tyre on 4" rims
thats a really common size on most new main stream cars so is availble in a wide range of brands and prices
and they looked fine and certainly didnt have that bulbous grass hopper look:
Personally i am a fan of Yokahama C Drives and 226's
Cheap to boot
Thankyou so much for the info, this has given me an insight to getting some good tyres...cheers!!!!! Thanks to you all. .......
I get my new tyres and on wheel balance on friday.....yahoo, got a bit done to the car this week, it has been in the Doc's (mechanics) for over a
week now and all fixed and ready for rego and to GO!! see you all at the Thirlmere Steam Festival next month (my first outing with the club). regards
