Well, looks like you guys out there just don`t have a clue about these 2ltr auto gear boxes. It changes fine but just hangs on too long in 2nd gear,
im sure it should change before I`m doing over 70 kmh. Come on just let me know. I think it is a 010 if that helps.
sorry i have had no joy with autos in busses hence the manual model would be sniffed out before an auto..
good luck with it..
then again maybe a service could help with new trans juice yeah??
h
Thanks mate, but have done the oil change, I have to just keep looking.
sounds like the vacuum modulator has had the dick
I have a type 3 auto. If I keep my foot down it won't change into third until 80km/hr. It won't change up until I start lifting off.
Like Dave said, there could be a problem with the vacuum modulator or it could be the way you are driving. Does it make any difference if you
accelerate gently or heavily?
Hey Purple T3, I had the same problem with the auto in my Fasty - turns out someone had jammed a restrictor in the hose from the modulator to the
intake manifold. Took it out and now changes into third as low as 20klm/hr.
Cheers
Dave
Ok you guys just keep sending in those suggestions I do read all of them. So far all of that stuff has been sussed, no luck. and to you big dave just keep that mig burnin on that beetle, give me a hoy when ya need help with the door bit. And by the way the Westy is just about ready to go on the market.
I had exactly the same issue. Mine was a 1982 air cooled T25.
99% of people told me it needed a rebuild
I tried changing the fluid - no go.
Lou (Lou's A1 at Regents Park) fixed it for me.
Apparently there is a filter up inside that you get to from the pan.
No big job but i guess you need to know what you are doing.
Think he charged under $400 and that included new front brakes and new struts for the back door
Hey critta, how does Thursday suit for a bit of expert instruction? I didnt think you would part with that Westy.
Cheers Dave
Funny, I hadn't seen it as a problem. If I accelerate gently it changes up a much lower speed. If it changed up at 20kph, accelerating would be hard work.
It only changes that low if I am just putting around. As you say, the change into second or top depends on how you are accelerating. If I accelerate heavily it will rev out and change accordingly. Kickdown works well when needed, but you need to brace yourself for the rampant acceleration.
um, I was hoping someone else would answer this correctly because I no longer have a 2L box to look at & explain correctly, the 2L box differs from the 1800 box in that the change speed in controlled by the Accelerator cable, it is a bit of an unusual set up in that the cable goes from the pedal to a lever on the side of the transmission & then from the other side of the lever a rod goes to the carbie cross linkage, staring at it & using a bit of logic, you can adjust it to vary the change speed, I just cannot remember the correct procedure
from http://www.subaruvanagon.com/
thanks, yep accelarator cable attaches bottom right hand corner of pic, & the lever adjustment, is at top left, but on kombi motor I think that adjuster is in engine bay on right hand side of cross-shaft & looks a bit different
providing all the other variables are correct like oil being clean and at the correct level, if its holding a gear too long then its the vacuum modulator
2L kombi Auto does not have vacuum modulator
Yeah,
What Kim said. The 010 does not have a vacuum modulator.
Sounds to me like the linkage between the kickdown lever on the auto and your carby linkage needs to be adjusted. Pretty simple. First check your
accelerator cable is not too slack - or too tight, then adust the linkage - sounds to me like you need to make it longer.
I have a suby in mine so I have deliberately adjusted it so it kicks up at higher revs than in a volksie.
You should be able to cruise around town at 60 in thrid without issue if adjusted right.
Thanks guys, I knew ya`s would come up with the answers to this gear change problem. Ok so just to make it more interesting, listen to this. It just
so happens that previous owner has taken off fuel injection and put on 2 barrel progressive webber or some thing that must have stuffed up the way the
thing won`t drop into top until I`m at great speed. By the way when she`s in top gear and ya give it some the kickdown works fine. Anyway I`ll be
checking that linkage set up I know exactly what it is I have been looking at that . Hey Dave Guess what I dont think Thurs is good got to go to
Agnes. Thanks and keep the info comming.
So you get it sorted?
Well the auto change is solved, very simple fix in the end, tell ya more about it later. Ye ha!!!
Thats it kombicol, it is all in the shaft that connects the carby to the lever on gear box in the pic above. If it is too long motor holds gears longer, as it is adjusted shorter the lower revs and speed it will change at. When made too short you loose the kickback. So just a bit of testing to get it at where you want it. Thanks to you guys I`m gunna be cruisin.
in other words you have adjusted the kick down ,just like in an old valiant ,ford ,holden etc if it isnt right it dont change right
