looking at doing a bit of repair on the rear drums but am a bit confused about what I've got, my break drums have a large hole in the centre with holes for the wheel studs to poke through, have seen pictures of others with what seems to be drums with threaded holes for the wheel studs and a spline that must fit over the axle. Near as I can figure out mine is about '64 IRS, whats the go, are the pictures of latter or earlier that mine?
Sounds like type 3 drums. Presume you have a beetle, IRS was '68 on for auto-stick and standard in the supers.
I have a buggy, thats one of the reasons I don't realy know what I've got, one realy embarrassing thing though is that while I have been visiting
AVD for a fair while I am still not up with some of the jargon...type 3 ?....so do you mean mine are likely to be a type 3 and if so what year would
that be? How would I find out about, and how do I identify what parts i have, for all I know it could be made up of all different bits, and another
thing... brakes, not breaks...silly me. I have a workshop manual by Scientific publications... Workshop manual series #45 1600 Beetle..... but it
dosn't have a picture of the drum in the section for brakes, just the backing plate with the shoes etc although there is a picture showing the drum
in the section on the rear suspension and while it's not real clear it does look a bit like mine. Confusion reigns supreme.

This is the type 3 (Notchback, Fastback & Squareback) brake setup. Do you have single or double spring plates on the trailing arms.
Thanks for the help so far Brent, is it possible the whole pan etc is not from a beetle or that the brakes are not from the original donor car?, or
are the brakes the same on both types of vehicle? reckon I'd better get to work and find out just wwhat this little bugger, oops, buggy, is built
outa, I have taken a photo of the brakes as your pic, when I can figure out how to post it I'll be able to get a better comparrison
Regards
Don
The type 3 brakes are basicully just a bolt on item to your beetle floor pan suspension and are a larger brake than the stock beetle rear brakes ,
being larger dia and width in shoes.
The added advantage of coarse being that they are also seperate to the hub for easy brake repairs .
Ok thought I'd ask here rather than start a new thread. I too have a buggy, but mine was once an early 5 stud beetle. Rear drums were stuffed, one
actually split in half, and after a bit of investigating i found out they are off a 66 - 67 type 3. Cant find drums anywhere to suit so i recently
bought a beetle for parts. Tried to swap the rear brakes over, backing plate and all. The driveshafts look to be longer on the type 3 brakes to the
beetle. Anyone know the easiest way of swapping this?
I'm new to vw so learning as i go.
The early type 3 drums are available, I believe Mick Motors has them locally(oz) or try CIP1. Yes VW's have a long and short axle in the swing axles,
all the type 3's were long axle. You can swap to the beetle drums by using a spacer between the drum and the nut. Try a spare bearing spacer if you
have one.

ok After checking that thread you posted brent it seems I have the type 3 66-74 as in your pic, unless I have the wrong info (and I often do) there
is more than one size in these drums, is that correct
thanks
don
No the detachable type 3 (4 stud) drums only came in one size. The link I posted was for the wide 5 type 3 drum (VWC-311-501-615-E) for gx_rex.
But the part # you posted is right for your application VWC-311-501-615-F
Hopefully the last question as I'm getting the hang of it now. Are the backing plates interchangeable?
thanks
Don
Not between beetle and type 3, the drum diameters are different. Wide 5 type 3 and 4 stud type 3 are the same.
