Rear Mains Bearing Question - With Picture

Hey,

The job started out simply wanting to replace the rear seal (leaking) and I noticed the bearing actually moves/rotates...by 5mm or so, now, I have never split a case before, nor taken the flywheel off. Can someone tell me if this movement is normal?? I thought this bearing was fixed i.e. between the two cases with dowels?? Sorry if this is a stupid question... just need to ask!!!

Oh information about engine... received it no-running, have brought new barrels/pistons/heads... now trying to assess whether I have to split the case??

your engine is buggered the main bearing thrust surface is worn

you may need a new engine case or it can be repaired by someone who knows how to do the job

the engine will have to be removed and stripped to do the repair

the end float or movement back n forth should be between 0.003 to 0.007 with a max orf 0.009 inches

where are you located

The bearing should be tight, ie no movement at all
the endfloat is the crank movement ......

read post again no pics before thought u had the flywheel on the crank

use a screwdriver and try n rotate the bearing on the scolloped areas of it

it should not rotate any direction

check again by pushing the cranshaft back n forth the bearing should not move

Right.... no need for a screw driver, it rotates either direction by a few mm with fingers alone!!

So, is it the bearing that is flogged out around the case dowels... or opposite?

Basically, do I replace the bearing or the case & bearings?

you will only find out when you strip the engine but it need to be rebuilt or replaced as its been FLOGGED
