Basically you need to strip it down to long block.
You then need to get a shroud, oil cooler, genny stand, manilfold, carb off a type 1 and swap it all over.
You need to block off where the Type 3 dip stick goes

I have certainly missed some things but you get the idea

That is correct, with a few exceptions and details. Do you have more details, what model engines, more photos of both engines would be a start.

If yr new into VWs then yes its a lot of work

have you had the Type 3 engine checked out for compression and did you hear it running

it may be better to do this frst and save a lot of extra work and money

may be better off recondition the origional engine

If it's an original type 3 case wouldn't it have no Beetle-dipstick tube? And if that had to be drilled into it (if that's possible), wouldn't the case have to be dismantled anyway? (Because of metal shavings?)

theres 2 ways around that
the easiest is to buy an aftermarket type3 to type 1 adapter

its a block off that has a dipstick tube on it for fitting type 3 engines into beetles

or you can have it drilled but yes the case needs to be stripped down for this

the other thing to consider is type3 blocks dont have an oil pressure sender hole cos stock theyre mounted to the oil cooler

again the case would need to be stripped down if u tapped it for one or the other option is use a type 3 oil cooler, trim the beetle shroud to clear it and use a 90* fitting so it doesnt hit the fire wall

also the engine in the pic has the automatic kick down swtich on the throttle linkage
if it was from an auto it wont have a clutch which is something else to consider
