running engine without fan for diagnostics?
Anthiron - May 6th, 2008 at 09:36 PM

i want to run my engine with the fan belt disconnected to pin point a problem that i think resides in the generator assembly.

i know you shouldnt run the engine without the fan going but people do it with drag cars.

how long could i run it without doing damage? is 1 minute too long? i just want to start it up, give it a rev and listen for a few seconds and then turn it off.

comments?

I think a minute wouldn't hurt... IMHO..

and as you say the drag cars do it without any fan etc...

and they push out heaps of heat..

wouldn't think a short run under a minute would hurt it... main thing is that the water will not circulate via the pump.
Think most drag cars would run electric water pumps and thermo fans (if they run radiators) so that its not a mechanical device sucking hp from the motor.

What? Am I missing something here?

I reckon a minute will be totally fine, especially if it's not already come straight off the freeway.

Think about how long it takes to 'warm up' on a cold winter morning (do you guys get those up north?). If I had a thermostat, I'd look and see how long it took to open the flaps: then I'd hypothesise that it's safe to run at least that long without a fan. Does this make sense to anyone else?

Cheers, A.

Have done this before, they do heat up surprising quickly but it is doable

from cold it will be fine just dont run it for hours

a few years ago on my way to work i came across a young girl broken down in a kombi
when i had a look the crank pulley had fallen apart.
the outter belt track had separated from the pulley center, how i have no idea but once it had cooled down i drove it 3kms down the road to work and put one of my old crank pulleys on and she was on her way

bumped into her a few months ago kombi is still going 3 years later
