Hi
A rear main crankshaft oil seal that goes in behind the flywheel part number 113 105 245
is around $15 approx

red double lip seal is best

And don't forget the one that goes inside the flywheel flange!

thats an O ring from memory..

and very inexpensive to replace

also, the seal needs to be lubricated
once its installed
just wipe the area between the two lips with some engine oil..
and place a few drops in the bottom of the seal

the seal should be seated slightly inside the housing

I always coat the outside of the seal with a small amount of Permatex No 3 Non hardening gasket cement

Just bought a red German made 'Elring' brand seal and 'o' ring for $18 the pair. I had to get from a VW place, the other parts suppliers around only had unbranded cheap looking rubber seals for $25 or so.

VW performance in Croydon, Melbourne

What worn metal are you talking about? I don't understand the question?

I believe He's talking about where the seal runs on..
the steel is very hard , so chances are it isn't worn..

You can usually put the seal in so it doesn't run on the old groove/s

but polishing the steel will fix it...

PS: the Elring seal and O ring seem very expensive at $25
but the quality is there...
Many shops sell the ELRING seal as most people won't use a Brazillian seal... LEE
