Battery drain 1970 1302

One for the more electrical minded.

I have located that I get a 0.3A drain on the battery from the radio when it is turned off. Is this enough to flatten a battery after a few weeks?

The battery reads 12.8V when charged, and the battery terminals when generator running shows 13.6V

ok for starters they didnt start making the 1302 till late 71 and most of them were 72 sbugs. so if its a 70 its most likely a 1500
it would eventually drain it but it would take a fair while

those voltages are fine for a genny equiped car

that draw is fairly normal for the memory/clock in digital radios and wont flatten the battery in a couple of weeks
but if ur bug was gonna sit for anymore than 3-4 weeks i'd d/c the battery or fit urself a battery isolation switch

supers started in 70 in most parts of the world
it was early 71 here
my first super was a 2/71 was bought new on april fools day 71 and i had a parts bug that was a 1/71 super

:dork: Sorry for upsetting a purist. It has 1970 on the rego label and 1971 on the Compliance. Why? I have NFI and honestly don't care. It is all my fault for even saying 1970, shoot me. :crazy:

It is a 1302 1600 TP (fact) so that is for dessert. :lol:

Yes , it should be 0.05 or 50mA otherwise your battery will go flat in 2 weeks. Disconnect the negative from battery & connect your meter in line to measure current draw, then remove your fuses one at a time to see which circuit is draning your battery.

1302S supers were made from 1st August 1970
which makes it a VW 1971 Model

No VW 1970 model 1302s Supers were made..

many books are now listing Beetle year of manufacture as the VW model year...
which is incorrect...

so if you have a 1302S made in August 1970
its a 1971 model beetle...
so far as VW are concerned... [ and many of Us]

engine numbers started with AF or AD

[then again if its made in 1970 thats the Year or date of manufacture...] [to normal people]

It is the circuit with CD player only fitted. The process you describe is exactly how I found the actual line causing it. The actual reading was 0.29A.

AD0990** engine number - sighted
11122947** chassis number - sighted
Rego label also has these details, and "1970 VOLKS SEDAN" as description

have u got both the BATT and ACC wires to the radio running off that fuse? so ur radio can be used without the ignition on??

if so thats were problem is
the joys of vws with no accessories position
nearly all headunits these days dont shut down completly till the ACC circuit is killed
all my JVC and kenwood headunits have had a standby mode like a TV they go into when u turn them off but the car is still running
this maybe were the draw is coming from

that would be about a march or april 71 build bug with the original engine too, somthing thats unusual these days
if the compliance plate is still on the front apron it will have the build date on it

Radio goes off with ignition. I will look into what the unit's spec's are. It is a Sony Xplod.

The Bug is pretty original as far as I can see. Never restored, original interior, most paintwork original other than fender scrapes etc. I know what to look for there, so that is why I bought it. I assumed the mechanicals were pretty original. The guy I bought it off said it was an old lady one owner, but that is all hearsay, like about 99% of what people like to repeat.

Compliance plate is 3/71

yea i figured it was either march or april 71
my first bug had original engine too and its chassis and engine number were very close to urs
it was feb 71

i wouldnt have thought that was an excess draw for a headunits memory but wait and see
if ur batterys flat after a few weeks u know who the culprit is

0.3A x 24hours a day = 7.2Amps

7.2A x 7 days a week = 50.4Amps

50.4A x 3 weeks = 151.2 Amps

What size battery do you have? If its still the original duty and size then yes it will be the cause.
