Gearbox sealing

just in front of the lower rear of the nose cone ,on the starter side of the box are three holes (in a vertical position) & leading to shift rods.
these holes are normally plugged. I have a few boxes that have one two or all of the plugs missing.
Reminds me of other makes of gearbox, which usually have a detent spring behind the plug.
Q 1: Is there anything behind the VW plug?
Q 2: where can you get the plugs, or is there a good alternative. (blind pop rivet?)
I'm sure there are lots of people with slow/small leaks from there & don't know it & are blaming somewhere else.

No, the detent ball and spring are behind the shift rod
(the shift rod has to removed before you can release the detent ball, then the plug is removed to get the spring out!)

If You clean the hole and around it
just stick a dab of silastic in the hole...
if everything is clean as - it will stick...
can be used on exhaust manifolds too...

Some 'brake clean' in the hole and the silicone sounds like the easiest solution.
Just near the outer edge though.
You dont want to clog up the works.
You CAN buy new steel plugs from brazil, but even if someone stocked them,
they may not fit tight into your particular holes being that the plugs are gone already.
I tend to re-use the stock aluminium plugs with some curil or permatex to seal them.
If you can turn some up from aluminium that may be your best solution.
