Well I am about to start a project of installing a turbo subi into a Maxfx and was after any good ideas you may have. The biggest problem I see is keeping the water etc away from the electrics. I want to use it as a buggy should be abused OH I meen used:bounce. Hope to have it going by the end of the year.
before doing anything I would talk to a Queensland Transport modification approval engineer.
The Max FX is a long wheelbase buggy, and will probably weigh about 800kg like the Sharpbuilt GS Limo's, which is just scraping the limit for
weight you'll need to get a 2.0lt turbo approved.
go to the RTA website (same rules as QLD) and read the mod rules to get some idea.

i have been told bi an engineer it wiil pass so long as it is 2l or below. i think it should flog a v6 though.:beer:beer:beer
as i have mentioned previously I have met a fellow with a EJ20 in a manx. He was unable to get a turbo approved by any engineers. I would definatly get the approval or proposed approval in writing and verifyed by whichever signatory, that way you are in the clear. I'd hate to spend 5K + only to find out that its never going to see the road.
I have been told by the engineer that he will definately pass it so i am happy with that.
Well your engineer should be able to tell you what else he wants with regards to legal requirements. I am sure he will want to see rear disc
brakes.
The only electrics you need to keep away from water is the ECU. Just mount it up high in a water proof box.
As for the EJ20T kicking my V6 arse, maybe in a straight line (since the maxfx will be a lot lighter), but I am sure I will kick your arse offroad :P.
You'll have to shorten the EJ sump if you plan on even going over a gutter.
The EJ20T will also require cutting a lot of fiberglass at the rear.
What gearbox are you thinking of using? If you plan on abusing the car the driveline will be your weakpoint.

I did not see any of the statements as negative. As for the sump we are looking at a dry sump system and as for the gearbox probably just a kombi to
start with but I am up for any sugestions there also. i am new to vw stuff so i have no idea of there strong and weak points yet. Sure I will find the
weak points though
As for the weight i do not know how much your baja weighs but I do not expect to get much less the 900kgs as a standard maxfx with 1600 and beetle box
is about 815kg. Yep definately getting rear discs wether they want them or not. I am thinking about hooking up a remote vacume booster for them as
well. maybe even rack and pinion steering as well.
Don't worry about vacuum assisted brakes, you won't need them. I run standard beetle front brakes and XF falcon rear disc brakes. The work
absolutely fantastic without vaccum assistance.
Go for a 6-rib kombi box with 228mm clutch. Use type 2 CV's at least, or get porsche 930 CV's and axles from the US if you feel rich. I am
running the 6-rib with a later vanagon 4 spider diff.
Dry sump is a good idea. The depth of the suby sump is insane.
You'll probably want to join the manx club, because it sounds like you'll need the contacts it will provide
John from Beach buggies australia knows me, and is a member of the manx club.
at 1500 for the pump + whetever for the accessories needed to run dry sump you coule easily spend as much on the system as you have on youre engine
i'd just get a new sump fabricated that is shorter. It will save you
heaps. The 091 will hold together but you should consider albins gears and ring gear. 2K will build you a nice box or keep saving and get yourself a
G50 for 4~7K Hmmm G50 anyway just raise youre tranny+engine and you will
be right, but i would not be picking races just yet you have a mountain of work in front of you and very few people who start out a conversion get to
the finish line. That said good luck i look forward to seeing it at a show

Contact Mike Sharp at Sharpbuilt he is doing sumps that are shorter but still have the same capacity and also a remote oil filter fitting . Also fit the gearbox a little higher and run kombi CVs on inner and outer .No problem with ground clearance then.

Anyway, back to the conversion. You can mount your gearbox higher but you will reduce how high you can have your car before your CV's reach their
limits. It's best to shorten the sump.
I run type 2 CV's inner and outer, and it's not limitless in travel. If you have an inch between your frame forks and your CV's then
the rest of the car isn't going to go very high.
Thanks guys. As anyone whao has done this type of conversion would know it all takes time. And money lots of money but it will happen. Lucky I have beer on tap at home.Also I am lucky in that there have been many subi conversions already done so it is much easier then something like wes had to do. I do not expect it to happen overnight but it will happen As i still have a few weeks before the buggy is finished with the type 4 motor i am just getting ideas before I attack the subi and remove it from teh front cut.
Oh Yeh I was talking to John(BBA) and he reckons you are a pretty decent bunch at the manx club so I am thinking of joining but I am just a bit rushed at the moment
