not running one cylinder
jonnyb - September 8th, 2008 at 09:13 PM

76 kombi waterboxer has a problem with one pot not wanting to work.
Things checked: head off, valves ok. Compression as same as it can be. Spark getting to plug, plugs swapped around. Fuel is getting to cylinder as it is getting wet. What is left to check? All help appreciated. thanks

have you have an engine transplant
76 should be a 2L air cooled engine ???

Not air cooled, injected water cooled, will check the year again.

Maybe water could be the problem........

I was gonna ask how you know it isn't running on that cylinder... no heat on the header from there, or does the engine not change idle when you disconnect the plug lead to it ??? Only thing missing on your list I think would be checking the plug leads good and in the right order, but I'm sure you've done that already.

Bit of a stretch, maybe an exhaust blockage so on the intake stroke it doesn't actually draw any mixture in ???

must be a 86 model then yes good point how do you know its not running on one cyclinder ???

Ive actually had that before on a old 1200 engine wouldnt pull the skin of a custard had to use a chisel to remove the carbon deposits in the inlet and exhaust ports ran likea dream after that

yes 86, exhaust not heating up.no change on lead off,was holding compression

Hmm, well that's just plain weird then - glad it's you struggling with it John and not me !!!

Not going to help find out why it's not firing, but if you disconnect all the other plug leads and crank it over with just the problem one connected, does it even try to fire on that cylinder at all ???

Fuel + air + spark HAS to equal at least a pop I would've thought....

Does the plug lead work on another pot? maybe a broken plug lead?

I would double check the plug leads are connected right. Is the dizzy aorund the worng way? like dave says (and you have told me many a time) if its got fuel + air + spark it should do something!

U didnt say it was injected yes broken wire to the injector will not allow any fuel to be delivered
so it wont run on one cyclinder
