how do i fix my handbrake? the button at the end has popped out of place and the handbrake will not lock on. its is on a 58 floor pan
thanks
matt
The reason it does this is because the hand brake needs to be adjusted so there is enough tension to keep the button in place...
once you have tightened the handbrake cables
it should just fall into place.. sort of...
very difficult to explain.... lol
I'm presuming the button is still attached to the rod??

Pull the handbrake up as far as you can, and look underneath. You will see the ratchet that it is supposed to hook onto, and something small dangling
underneath the handrake itself - this is the piece that has spun around, and release itself from your handbrake rod and button. With one hand pulling
up the handbrake as hard as you can, attempt to spin the small hook around, until the ratchet teeth are showing - if you do this all in one swoop, you
can also manage to spin it around and catch the handbrake rod. Have a few goes at it, and you'll see what I mean. Once it's all grabbed again and is
working, drop you handbrake down until it's only halfway up. Then grab a couple of spanners, and tighten up your handbrake cables - they are on
either side of the handbrake - you should see the nuts when you first remove your handbrake boot.
I hope this helps - it's a bit tricky to explain, but you'll soon work it out when you start to work in it.
hey, thanks to all, will have a look tomorrow.
matt
tried what you said, i can get the handbrake to lock on but have to push the little tab in by hand and the button keeps popping out. looks like i am
up for a new/s-hand handbrake if anyone has one!!!!
thanks
matt
are you saying it pops out when you pull it all the way up?
i would'nt consider them a wearing part, with little that can go wrong there,so i doubt you will have to replace it
as squizy has described above, except i'd take the two 10mm nuts off the cables completely and knock the handbrake pivot pin out (after removing one
of the cir-clips)............have a good look at the way the rachet operates then...........travel should only be three or four "clicks" to hold the
car on even the decent hill parking spots
then replace the lever back onto the car, without the cables attached..........you will notice if you now pull the handbrake up too far, the buttton
will pop out!!!!...........
i'm guessing your cables just needed adjusting up (at the lhandbrake) so it doesn't travel past the end of the ratchet plate
grease the rachet and pivot pin whilst it's apart.
i'll give you 1/2 an hour, report back then
chuck us some more info!

What concerns me here is it is actually quite dangerous to adjust the handbrake, without first adjusting the rear brakes.
