Golf struts inserts for S Beetle. How?
alien8 - November 13th, 2008 at 10:08 PM

Really sorry for this stupid question.
Ive heard it mentioned a few times about using Golf mk1 strut inserts in lowered Beetle struts. How are the golf struts different? They look like they have a shorter casing/body length than the stock beetle inserts? How does it all work, I just cant picture how a shorter insert can work in the longer stock strut housing? Do you cut and re-thread the top of the strut housing tubes to fit the shorter golf inserts or are they in fact the same casing length as stock inserts?
Sorry I am dumb!

OK, Just one question then. What can you do to the strut housing to make the shorter strut insert fit snug?

You can cut the strut, and you can weld the thread on top, to take the cap to hold the insert in the strut.
You can also cut and reweld the bottom spring saddle down a few inches, which allows you to keep more spring length for a nicer ride.

None of these modifications are legal, and you would want to have an approved welder ( or a damn good one) do either job if you are entertaining the idea!!

Alternatively you could buy some off the shelf lowered front suspension for S/LBug... this is costly though.

The perches have been lowered 2 1/2'' and I think I should be running it with lower inserts and cut bump stops?

Could you put a spacer in the the bottom of the strut housing to bring the golf insert up to stock height? The idea being the strut insert sitting in the same position as stock inserts but with the shorter/lower travel that the golf insert offers.

I know this is frowned upon but I am thinking about cutting a tiny bit( no more than an inch) off the bottom of the coil just to bring it down a touch more for the lower insert.

Adjustables are on the cards in the future but not just yet.

Why dont you buy a set or adjustable struts for the Superbug or L bug
much easier than stuffing around with the golf junk

I would if I could ,but for now its the cut and weld method.

yeh, I have cut many coil springs, both lowered ones, and stock.

cut slowly to avoid too much heat.

never had them break.
