'74 Kombi, manual motor onto auto box?
Andy - June 9th, 2003 at 09:56 PM

Does anyone know what's involved to fit a 1.8L type 4 motor out of a manual Kombi onto a 1.8L auto box?
Obviously the flywheel is replaced, but is the crank end suitable, are there extra throttle or vacuum linkages?
Thanks,
Andy :thumb

To put it into a bus you will need the shifter, the connecting rod, the shifter console, the kickdown linkage, the torque convertor, flexplate, and the Torx-head bolts to connect the flexplate to the crank. I'm not sure about the size of the spigot in an 1800 though. I'm also not sure about how the auto shifter mounts up to the body (yet) - there may be a different bracket welded onto the body.

Thanks Kruizinkombi,
It's an auto Kombi with not motor. I can get an old 1.8L motor (out of a manual) to fit into it. Just wanted to know how much hassel will be involved.
I will still be missing the torque converter
and flex plate though.

The balance pipe between carbies has one outlet for the booster on the L/H side for manuals, on 003 autos there is also an outlet on the R/H side for a vac line to the auto........the rear tinware is also different to accomodate the extra hose and the auto filler tube.....other than swapping over the flex plate, its not too much of a drama.....just remember to check the endfloat when you fit the flex plate.

Cheers mate!!
If you mean end float in the crank, it has HEAPS, even plenty of radial movement thrown in for free :D
Will only ever be a bush basher :thumb

Put a set of bearings in it, even if you don't do anything else. It will last a lot longer. :thumb

Or alternatively, a reco bottom end should be less than $700 change-over.

I was under the impression that 1800 autos weren't too strong and would probably be unsuitable for a bush basher. (???)

Thanks,
I did get another old crank (thanks Dasdubber:thumb). If that's better than what's in there it will be swapped over. Certainly won't be spending money on it though. I'll save that for 'Andy'.
