Can anyone tell me what can be towed with a 1600cc twinport beetle, a 1600 SP Splitty and a 1500cc Type 3?

Can they tow a car trailer with a beetle on?

Just wondering

Steve

I know it changed in NSW a few years ago, simplified - a car was not allowed to tow more than it's own weight, but they changed the rules to align more closely with other states. There used to be a brochure at RTA & I think you can find the rules on their website

Steve, I remember Bob Prendegast decades ago towing his formula vee car all over the state & interstate with a worked over '57 beetle.
I occaisionally moved my military vehicles with a tandem attached to a bay camper-1600TP- & that worked quite well. Slow & plenty of rowing action with the gear stick but OK.
Thinking about it, we have an advantage in that VW's are light & probably don't need as strong a car trailer as "normal" cars. I have often envisaged a skeletal, long single axled trailer for the job- ie no sides & perhaps aluminium treadplate only on the floor for the wheel runners- that shouldn't weigh much more than 300kg-400kg tops. Put three quarters of a ton of car on that & that should be within what a Kombi could haul. Maybe talk to a trailer manufacturer?

They could pull them, but wont like it.

I have towed a a rather large cubby house kit behind my fastback and it wasnt nice. Brakes werent up to it. Sat on 60 the whole time. No way would I have gone over that. that is with trailer brakes.

Another problem is what is the towbar bolted to? Its only sheetmetal of the inner guards supporting the weight. Not real good.

I dont think a type 1 engine should be pulling around too much weight. I think a car is too much.

A car tralier empty will weigh over 1/4 tonne. (mine is 410kg) but a mate built one especially for a mini as light as he could (trying to get under the 210kg limit) and his was 240. Personally I dont think its strong enough but it hasnt broken yet.
